5 Megapixel camera?

The camera in the Droid is said to be a 5 mega pixel camera. I have a 5mp Kodak point and shoot camera that takes really nice pictures that sometimes I can fool people into thinking I used a DSLR camera. Now the camera on the Droid which is said to be 5mp looks like crap in my opinion. I've taken pics in the daylight and at night and it looks grainy either way. I have played around with the white balance but mainly keep it on Auto. I own a Nikon D90 so I will use that to take any pics of importance.

The sensor in the Droid IS 5mp..but very tiny. The sensor in your Kodak is MUCH larger, and has more area per pixel to absorb light. The lens system in the Kodak also gathers more light than the tiny lens in the Droid. There really is no comparison between the two, except for the pixel count.

With digital cameras, this is the nature of the beast. The more pixels you cram into a tiny sensor, the more noise you get. For its size the Droid's camera does a pretty decent job IMHO, but again there is no comparison to a decent point-and shoot.

A agree... the number of megapixels does not really contribute to the quality of the picture. I have an old 2megapixel Canon that still blows my newer 12 megapixel cameras away.

The type of lens also makes a huge difference as well. My Nokia 2 yr old cellphone (N95) is considered to still be among the best camera phones. It's 5mp and has a Carl Zeiss lens.

There once was a photo collection on Flickr showing where they snapped pics using a camera with different lenses. The difference was amazing.

Five megapixels should produce an image way bigger than 640 by 480.

That size is only point three megapixels. My Droid will not make a picture any larger than 640x480 (or .3 mp) with its so-called 5 mp camera.

Size of chip should have nothing to do with number of pixels in resulting image. Number of pixels should.

Any idea how to make a Droid actually take a 5 mp photo?

My Droid takes pictures at 2592x1936. Like people say there's tons of noise though.

This whole conversation boils right down to something that every photographer has been saying for years. People put too much stock in MP ratings. MP ratings are nothing more than the size of the image. That's it. Picture quality depends on an insanely large number of variables, and yet everyone has resorted to choosing their gear rated only by the MP.

Yep, most of my pics come out noisy and generally poor. But then again I mostly only pull out the Droid for pics when I'm out w/ friends, or at a concert, or somewhere on the run & just need a quick pic of something. The Droid is for 'fun' pics, not for serious photography. That's what my Nikon dSLR is for.

@shadowdude: That camera must cost many thousands of dollars. ; )

Infiniti....mine as well be a Altima! Haha just kidding. I looked very closely at a 2008 M but decided on the Genesis 4.6.

Yeah it's actually rebadged JDM with Skyline 350GT badging (which is what the car is in Japan). Just to be different. So many G35s on the road.

It's closer to a 350Z than an Altima :p Very close to a 350Z actually.

Thread Jack! Yoink!

Not to be confused with the Nissan Skyline GTR, which is a different car all together.

IMO, the G35 is what the 350Z should have been.

Holy hell... we should just start a car thread. lmao.

5MPix != great pictures. Not all 5MPix cameras will give you the same results. The sensor, it's size, the lenses used... and the software that processes and compresses the image... make the difference.

My Kodak 5MPix SLR like camera takes better pictures than my 7.1MPix Canon point-and-shoot.

Compress the image!!??

BURN THE HERETIC!!!!!
