Root How to Root 2.1 Droid

Contacts are stored on your google account. Apps you will have to redownload but you won't have to pay for the ones you've paid for already.

You also lose any application data. Once you are rooted though you can get Titanium Backup which allows you to backup the applications, the data, and the market entry. The market entry means that if you restore a titanium backup, the market will know you have certain apps installed and will be on the lookout for updates, as if you had downloaded the app through the market.

Astro file manager has an app backup thing, but it just backs up the .apk files and not the data or the market entry so it's virtually useless. You don't have to download the apk again but will lose any settings and save files for the app, and if you want the market to know you have the app installed and look for updates you still have to download the app again anyway.

This actually works. I unrooted my phone, then manual 2.1 update. I hated it. It pales in comparison so rooted 2.1. I used this method to downgrade my phone back to 2.0.1 and then root it again, actually. it takes a little over 5 minutes to do it. the sbf file was slightly big for my internet, so that took a while to download. x]

Edit: I didn't so the same exact thing, but the theory is the same. sorry! ><;;

Stupid question #2.. After I go through this process, how might i take advantage of all the other custom roms out there? Does it have to be reflashed again each time i want to try a custom rom? Or?

You do have to "re-flash" all the different roms, so to speak, but it doesn't take long. Also when rooted you can use a program called Titanium Backup which will allow you to back up all your applications, their data and market entries. This means if you wipe and flash a different rom, you just download Titanium Backup from the market, and then have it restore all your apps from your SD card. You can do this all within about 10 minutes.

Dammit that sounds like a lot of work. lol.

rj - I want to root so I can OC..

I was very happy with DroidMod, I don't know if I want to do a lot of work rooting and ROM trying at this point. What is a split second in speed? Maybe I will wait till DroidMod has a 2.1 root updater and new ROM. I like the stability with official 2.1!

At least once you are rooted again you will have the luxury to make easy backups, try the sm
