Getting a little sick of all these issues...

Hey guys, I've had my hero for...3 weeks now, and I'll have to say..I'm getting a little tired of the issues, lagging. I got it from bestbuy march 16th, so I could potentially return it with no problems. Just seems like a pretty buggy, laggy phone for the money I paid for it. I used my sisters droid yesterday, and man, that thing is fast.

For one, it takes forever to load anything, I want my 150 dollar phone to respond on command lol.

Another issue i've been having is that, my texts seem to be delayed a little bit, as well as my clock. I looked at my phone today and it said it was 7 30, which it wasnt, it was 746, I just hadent looked at my phone since 730, so I unlocked it, and then I got a text...from 735. I find it a little ridiculous.

But anyways, should I wait it out, wait for the 2.1 and cross my fingers that the bugs are fixed? Return it, go back to my blackberry...wait for the Nexus to hit sprint? Give me some pointers here, I want a smart phone that does all the android stuff. Sprint seems to be my only option, as the 69.99 deal is just simply awesome.

I'd root the phone if i knew what I was doing, but i don't want to take the chance of A) bricking the phone, B) losing my warranty.

Let me know what you guys think

You can't really expect it to respond like the Droid since it has about half the processing power. However, you could wait till this summer for the HTC Evo to come out - it should be comparable if not quicker than the droid. If you are sticking with Sprint and want to upgrade, the Hero is the way to go. Mine ran pretty good stock, since then have rooted and am running one of the 1.5 roms and I feel like it is pretty responsive. I was worried about rooting at first, but if you read, read and read on the forums about what to do and what not to do, really should be no worries of bricking the phone. If you needed to take it in for warranty work, you can flash back to stock. Anyways, that's my 2 cents, hope it helps in your decision.

Lastly, if you are having that many problems and don't want to root, I would do a hard reset and see if you have the same issues. Otherwise, it is possible you got a lemon.

If you need help rooting shoot me a PM and I will help you. I had no idea about doing it myself and I followed the instructions presented to me VERY carefully and I am VERY happy with this device. It does not lag and it is very responsive. I removed tons of apps among other things and I my friend who has a Moto Droid tells me it has a slight edge over his with responsiveness. Do not give up on this thing. It is well worth keeping.

I have thought about the EVO that is coming out though I can't justify having to carry a brick around. This thing is thin and lite and I just can't seem to recreate all the issues that people keep reporting about it.

On another note,.....if your within the 30 day period you have nothing to worry about. If you brick it take it back to Best Buy. I bricked the first one I had and they exchanged it no questions asked. My bricking it was due to the fact I tried to flash a bad ROM. All I have done now is root and remove 35% of the stock apps. I am actually sitting at 120 MB of free space for apps and I have managed to load about 30 or so more apps.

I have a Hero and I haven't rooted my phone yet, even though I would really like to, but all that seems way to confusing and complicated and that's why I haven't done it. Yes the phone is a little bit slow at times, but it's not like it's way too slow. Once you get to know your phone, you'll learn how to deal with the slowness of the phone. I personally love my hero even thought sometimes seems a little slow, which I don't really mind. What I actually really mind is YouTube not playing, not even on the brower!!! I just can't get over that lol

For a sec, I thought of getting the EVO but, I hate big phones!!!

#2: Reboot a couple times a week (or whenever it gets slow)
#3: Calibrate everything
#4: Get rid of unnecessary apps, they're just taking up memory

Is there anyway to clear cache's all at once?

I just went through and cleared all my caches, also...by calibrate everything you mean...Keyboard...sense...waht else?

there's an app for that (literally...cache cleaner, or something like that)

Calibrate your keyboard, g-sensor (if possible on stock rom), and anything else you can think of lol.

I was running fresh 1.5 with gumbo custom kernel, setcpu and cachemate. It was decently quick. I really dont care what anyone else would say on here but:

No matter what mod or custom ROM you have on your Sprint Hero...it will NEVER be quick enough to be deemed 'Acceptable.'

I've had mine since December and have tried everything and I have all the same issues you have and then some. Return it and get a better phone dude. I'm pissed I'm stuck with this thing. The only positive thing about this phone is the wifi tether. Without that I would have chucked it out the window while doing 80mph weeks ago....

you apparently haven't tried everything, or you wouldn't have the problems anymore. The Hero is a great phone, and certainly the best option on Sprint at the moment, especially with the Dev support that's available.

I know people are skeptical about rooting, but that would be my advice. I'm by no means a hardcore tech guy, but the directions were easier than I had expected if you use Fresh Kitchen. I initially had my issues with this phone with the lag and other misc. issues, but I have rooted and am extremely happy with this phone now. That would be my recommendation. That, or return it for something that suits your needs.

Honestly, besides battery life, my moms iPhone and my sisters droid were both awesome. Sure they have little quirks but nothing compared to my hero, even me typing this mesaage has more lag than my old windows 95 pc.

Half the time people bitch about lag it's because they have a shit ton of txt messages...it will literally make your phone cry. I'm serious...I saw my wife's phone weeping tears.

+1 for root. I just did it yesterday, because I was so pi$$ed that the hero didn't work the way it should. I now love it! the battery is sooooo much better, it has very little, if any, lag. The new Fresh Kitchen auto rooter is super duper easy to use. I am very much not a technophile, in any way and had my phone rooted and flashed a cooked rom in about 6.5 minutes, literally.


If you're gonna do it, just read a bunch about it on this forum and the xda forum. If you have questions, ask! Most everyone on here is very helpful if you need it.

Either way, stock or rooted, good luck! It really is a good phone, you just have to figure out how to make it work for you.

sorry you are having such a bad time, but maybe you should update your ROM. my phone is blazing with the new flash. any faster and it may have to preempt my wishes.

mine is rooted and still too slow. i only got the hero so i could test out android. return it and get the droid if you dont mind Verizon or wait for the evo. i for one am waiting for the evo.

Um yeah, I have. I've spent hours pouring over these forums trying different ROMs and other assorted tips and tricks. Any improvement with any of them was negligible and in some cases made the phone even laggier and unusable. Best phone on Sprint? LMFAO. Not even close. My 3 year old Blackberry Curve stomps all over this Hero in every area but wifi, which it doesn't have. I currently have Sense turned off because of yet another thread recently which claimed longer battery life. Not only is the battery draining faster, but the phone is so laggy it's almost completely useless. I tried using my second battery today thinking it might be a battery issue, same thing.

You must have a bum phone, dude. Mine works as fast as I can type. When I have 3g coverage, it loads web pages or downloads as fast as my laptop on my satellite internet. I think you should take it back and get sprint to give you another one.

There's no lag using the stock keyboard, especially once running a custom ROM (the XDA one that comes on DC 2.05 is a bit laggy), I have no lag moving between pages, minor lag messing on the web (due to the 2.1 ROM's not being very optimized yet), apps load up in a hurry, market has slight lag (again, part of the 2.1 market I believe...more data to load). Oh, and did I mention that I can easily get 18-24 hours out of my battery, at which point it goes on the charger anyway (bedtime).

Perhaps your text threads are too big, the phone does have an issue when your total texts get over a thousand or so (I believe custom ROM's help out with this).

But most people on this forum have a great time with this phone, because it is indeed a great phone. Does it have a few flaws? Of course, what smartphone doesn't? But there's workarounds for them all. If you're not willing to do a few workarounds here and there, then a smartphone probably isn't for you

My reaction when I first got it, unrooted and no customizations, " I paid 150 for this?!" After rooting, flashing, and customizing, this phone became the phone of my dreams. I owned a blackberry curve 8330, and it got old due to the laggyness at times.

If I WERE YOU, I would consider rooting, but make sure you are comfortable.
