The SIII is more than competent and can hold its own with any other phone out there. But for me, the Note 2's screen size is what sold me. The other hardware specs are impressive as well however the big ass screen was the only reason I needed to get this phone. That and the SIII seems to have battery draining issues whereas my Note 2 can last all day and then some .
I went and purchased the S3 the day it came out. Great phone but I love the size of the N2 and the battery life is so much better. I don't think I could go back to the S3 now.
I bought the S3 in July to replace my iPhone 4S and was very happy with it. Awesome phone. Specs and web reviews of the Note 2 got my attention though and especially the new shape which made it look like just a bigger S3 compared to the original Note.
Bought my Note 2 about three weeks ago and definitely worth the upgrade. Awesome screen and battery life combined with blazing fast performance.... Love it! Best phone I've ever owned and now the wife is getting my S3 to replace her iPhone 4. Cheers!
It's similar but not exactly the same. They both use efficient second gen LTE modem from Qualcomm. In Note 2, modem chip is separate from processor but GS3 has it on the same chip with processor. So LTE data performance will be similar.
But antenna design is different and Note 2 probably has edge on it due to larger antenna area. So far Note 2 seems to be getting no major complaints on signal reception, call quality.

I don't know about Verizon, but I normally have 2-3 bars in my house (this is the 1st phone I have had that has any bars so I was very impressed); however my wife's S3 only gets 1-2 bars. Still better than past phones on both sides, but the Note 2 is just that little bit better.
I upgraded to the S3 the week it was released and LOVED it. It was the best phone to date that I had ever used on Verizon. I sold it 2 weeks ago so I could get the most money for it before the GN2 was released and the price went down. I've had to use my old Thunderbolt these past 2 weeks and can't wait to activate my GN2 on Thursday. The Thunderbolt has to be one of the worst phones I've ever used. So yes I'm upgrading from S3 to the GN2. It's everything the S3 has with a faster processor, a larger screen, the s pen, and the android jellybean OS plus a few extra things.
