Nexus 4 without a data plan?

I want to get the Nexus 4 but Im currently on a family talk and text only plan from At&t. The contract just started so I still have a while go to and dont want to pay the $30 data plan charges that will add up to $720 over two years....I was wondering if anyone has tried or knows if one can get away with just switching their sim from their old phone into the nexus, having the data turned off and not having at&t detect it as a smart phone? Im surrounded by wifi all the time and therefore I dont really have much need for the data use and being a poor college student, its not worth the price. I was under the impression that it would work but then I read that google had given up the nexus one IMEI's to providers like at&t and am now convinced that it's rather unlikely that I could get it past them. Well when I had them switch my SIM out from my Galaxy Note to a micro sim the guy on the phone later that night from AT&T couldn't tell what kind of phone it was from looking at their system. He put me on "unlimited data for non-smartphones" and so far there hasn't been any issues. If you can get them to give you a micro sim (I'm assuming what you have uses a regular sized SIM card) then you should be able to pop it in and it won't try to use data cause your plan isn't set up for one. Just speculating here though.

Why not download Groove IP Lite and give it a try. It uses WiFi to make phone calls and works quite well for me I have tied it up with GV (Google Voice) using the GV number they gave me and have disconnected my landline. I give out the GV and if I need to change phones I don't need to tell anyone other than GV. Also it is very easy to block unwanted callers and you get emails letting you know if you have missed a call for some reason.

Thats good news, I might get it and try, if all else fails....I have a very tiny tablet!

That is a good idea, but I would want my phone to work when Im not around wifi also, and I already have a 2 year contract so cant really do anything about it now, but I could get google voice and have the nexus be more phone like....and have TWO PHONES. i will feel like quite the business individual.

Yea with a 2 year contract you are stuck but I have been thinking I also want to have a phone when I am not around wifi or my wifi hotspot dies so I am looking into getting a pay as you go plan/microsim from t-mobile the one that is $10.00 for 30 minutes and 90 days of service that come to $3.34 per month for a backup plan and if I keep refilling the plan then the the unused minutes rollover.

The Nexus 4 is more than a smart phone, it is a ultra portable android device. You get all the non phone features of an android device at a great price. Seems simple to me.

That's what's so great about android is being able to do what you want with your device. I like having data when I'm out and about but if you don't want to pay for that or don't need it it's nice that he should be able to pull that off if he can get a carrier to give him the right SIM card etc.

Im surrounded by wifi 80% of the time, and just want a phone that has a decent camera, and internet capabilities, and angry birds, i dont understand why I should have to pay $30 a month or settle for a basic flip phone instead
