ok, so I know how to print using google cloud print. But, my phone has "printer settings" in the options. I found my printer, and even printed a test page successfully. Now, how do I print a document from my phone via the ICS Print, NOT cloud print?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if it will print via a bluetooth printer with out a "Middle man" computer?

I don't know about bluetooth, but I have a WiFi printer that is not connected to a computer and it prints fine to that printer. If I'm at the house, I can print with the MotoPrint thingy, but away from home I use Printer Share or HP EPrint. The jury is still out on which I like better.

I have a tiny network with two computers and one network printer controlled from wireless/wired router. I can use the Bionic to print through the Wi-Fi connection to the router to a printer.

With Wi-Fi on you have to go into System Settings | Printer
Select Add Printer
I had to use Manual and give it the IP address of the printer

The print support on the Bionic is pretty limited.

The phone actually works.... but it sounds like it doesn't have a driver that allows it to "talk" directly to the printer so it is using another computer to do that for you. You may want to ask the manufacturer of the printer if they have any plans to make drivers for the Android OS ( ICS in this case )

All items that you want t print need an app that has a share ability - document reader, PDF reader, images, etc. You then share the document and select the print app.

so basically the ability to print is not native to android, you need an app with the ability.

Correct.

You can print pictures from your phone gallery but you need an app for doc's.

Technically, the Gallery itself is an app. You need apps for all. It's just that an image viewing app is already built in to our phones.

Depends on if you can connect the phone to the printer and send files to it or not. The BIONIC does support A2DB, so it should be possible, but our printer may be just as much of a problem s the phone itself.

Let us know - I'll be looking for a remote solution soon, n I'd like to know which is better.

so what's the trick to making a wifi printer work.

so far i've had no luck in using the wifi feature. the phone connects. the laptop connects. but nothing prints untill that wire is connected to laptop. have yet to make the phone work. PERIOD.

The phone will connect via WiFi to either 1) the printer itself, provided that the printer can be connected to the LAN directly (WiFi or wired), ***AND*** the wireless connection that your phone makes to the router ***IS NOT PARTITIONED*** - IOW, so that it can see other devices on the same network; or 2) The computer that is sharing the printer on the network.

It sounds like you're in group 2 - which means, yes, you need the wire connected. However, your post is very ambiguous. Can you detail what wire where connected which to what?

More importantly, please detail your setup - ***SPECIFICALLY*** whether your printer is connected directly to your router or if it is connected to your computer and shared to the network. Then it will be easier to help.

To anyone else about to say "Well, I tink OP means "this" or "that" - let's hear back from the OP and be sure, instead of thinking.

Wireless partitioning needs to be disabled on your router for this to work in any manner or fashion. Learned that the hard way.

Not sure who you are reporting to, but yeah, that is the general gist of how the printer works.

@all: FWIW, Brother printers usea very hokey proprietary PCL driver that absolutely sucks. If you have issues with Brother printer, go to the website and grab the generic Windows PCL driver - it works tons better.

Has anybody tried Google Cloud Print? Yes, you need to keep a computer on for *some* printers, though some can register to Google without a computer - but this should work both within your LAN and even remotely, for wired or wireless printers connected to a Windows, Mac or Linux PC. I never print from my phone - I may try later - but I know it works great for some apps from my iPad and Mac, again, remotely.

There is an Android app that exists in the share menu: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pauloslf.cloudprint&hl=en

And the setup that you need to do for printers: Getting Started with Google Cloud Print ? Google Cloudprint

as a matter of fact, I have. I love it. It's best to have a printer that actually says "Google Cloud Print Ready". There are several Canons and Epsons that will work, and any ePrint HP will work. It's pretty awesome.

If your printer does not support Google Cloud Print, you can still use GCP, but as mentioned, it will need to be connected either wirelessly or via USB to a computer that A) is on and B) is connected to the internet.

This service is especially handy for those of use using the Google Chromebook.

Also, I have used the android app "cloud print" and it works great! It lets you connect to your google cloud print account and print to any of your cloud print printers via your phone/tablet.
