I DESIRE an Nexus One

Hi guys,

I'm abandoning ship (galaxy ship, that is). I've had just enough of it for all the reasons you can find on this forum (and others).

I want an NexusOne but it's a bit expensive in my country and I was thinking about the new HTC DESIRE. The specs are top notch and I can live with that tiny chin (I would prefer without it). The rest of the differences are ok except one: it's not a "google phone". The most annoying thing about galaxy was the lack of support and while latest android version reached 2.1, galaxy was still struggling with 1.5. I fear this will be the case with DESIRE too since it's not an official google phone (see hero case).

Perhaps being so similar in specs with nexus could make it easier for modders to port latest nexus rom to desire (I heard they already ported desire rom to nexus for the "sense" theme)!? I really want what iphone fans have: instant upgrade to the latest (and greatest??) OS version (I hate iPhones btw).

So, what do you guys think?

Isn't Desire more expensive than N1? )

Nope, at least not in my country (romania). 465/625 euro desire/nexus.

Desire doesn't have a "chin", perhaps you are thinking of the Legend?

Nope, I meant DESIRE. It's not perfectly flat, like nexus is, but a little bent at the bottom. Not technically a chin but still...

i'd wait a few months for the release of the evo 4g and the next iphone; those will probably bring some prices down quite noticeably

I think galaxy is the perfect compromise when it comes to overall size. Anything larger than this seems too much. I know nexus/desire are larger and I hope I can live with that, but EVO 4g it's too damn BIG!!!
Of course, you are right about prices but I don't think I can survive much longer with my galaxy....it too damn sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! :(

P.S. I'll never buy another Samsung phone...or motorola for that matter (I had similar issues with one of their phones in the past and I don't forget easy).

desire has no chin, ive had one in my hand and spend a full day with one (very sexy)
it is more powerfull and responsive than an N1.
its more a very subtle lip and the design is there to stop your thumb slipping off and the handheld falling from your hand.due to button/sensor possition

How could it be more powerfull than nexus one if they both have the same processor?
DESIRE has a little more RAM which indeed could help with responsiveness (along with their SENSE theme).

Anyway, nobody seems to know the answer to my question: can I count on the fact that when android 2.2 (or any other) hits nexus it could easily be ported to DESIRE as it basically has the same hardware (with or without SENSE)??

the one i tested at work was running at 1ghz although it was a pre production model, i thought nexus one had a 800mhz cpu contrary to what gsm arena states.
the more ram the better also

edit im a tool and im wrong
still desire looks awsome and the ram would make a difference

It's not about envy...I simply want an phone that actually works like one. I don't have the money to make an upgrade so soon (I bought galaxy 6 month ago) but I'm tired trying to make the damn thing work.

I glanced a bit in the "desire thread" and they even have an "I love my desire" topic. I don't see something similar in this section (galaxy) or at least one user to actually "love" this phone. More than that, there's only one problem reported (so far) related to some paid apps not showing in market but that not the phone's fault. Just take a look in this section....all you can find ARE problems...And I actually paid a lot of money for this.

No more!!

P.S. I think I'll buy an DESIRE tomorrow (at least I'm gonna play with it at the shop...and with an nexus for comparison). I'll keep you posted :)

desire has not been out anywhere near as long as the galaxy
there were "i love galaxy" threads like 9 months ago
it does work
i like my phone other than having a bit low memory but it still works like any other android with the exception of being a little slow at times
when you look at other forums for other devices that have been out as long as the galaxy you will see similar things.
as with anything over time the problems will seem worse as more people complain about them as more people have the phone and join the forums

what "doesnt work" on your galaxy?#

im not saying our phone is great, its not in comparison to the newer generation android but its not "bad" either

Ohoo, don't get me started :)
THIS problem kept me frustrated for a few MONTHS. This alone is a good enough reason to never ever buy another samsung phone. EVER. I did not send it for repair yet but with your help (you, as in Rastaman-FB) at least now I know how to temporary fix it. Thanks again! :)

The second place goes for the lack of support...as it is non-existent.

The third place goes for it's speed...and I'm not talking about a little lag when doing something lite (like browsing through menus). I'm talking about repeated force-close pop-ups not because a program it's stuck but because some things takes like forever to load (like loading the home screen after you close "igo" or some other "heavy" app).

And there's the thing about programs that make Android so nice but can't be run on 1.5/1.6 (like google voice search, or maps with navigation). I know there are alternatives...and let's pretend those are as good as the real thing but what's the point of using them on a phone almost unresponsive when those programs need more that a few MB of RAM?

All those problems are related to application part of the phone but there are a lot of problems with the phone part too...and those are severe as well. ONE in FIVE calls I can only hear some strange noises (like an alien psychedelic language) and need to dial again/back. Reception is BAD (2g or 3g). I need to get close to a window when I'm indoor (I have an samsung e730 which works much better).

Did I mention that after 9 months (?) after release I can't find a dedicated car-holder for it??

And I can keep writing the whole day...but what's the point? It's still the most crappy phone/device I ever used.

a hardware defect means you wouldn't buy another device from the company again?
every device produced in these kind of volumes have some hardware defects - you were just one of the unlucky ones that was hit by one

did you experience this on cupcake? 'cause i didn't, only on jb2 (haven't used other donut firmwares), which wasn't released by samsung, it's a leak
meaning, don't blame samsung when your device isn't working properly after you installed an experimental firmware

1. Try to imagine what it's like to use fow a few months a phone that works randomly (and it's almost useless when it's not working). I could not send it to service because I was not able to reproduce the problem (as it occurred randomly) and could not sell it either (I'm not that kind guy). Then we'll talk.

2. Yes, I'm on JB6 now. On II5 this problem was not so severe but it was there. And I only use one widget (battery lite) and I'm killing regularly almost everything.
Since when a "leak" it's indeed a leak?? And assuming it's indeed a "leak" and they are not capable to prevent it every single time...how much time do they need to cook an real ROM with an already outdated OS? I'd say they had enough time but they have other priorities. They don't even bother to release the code for others to do the job in their place.

leaks are both good and bad. if its a leak and its not official it means its not been accredited by the service provider which probably means there are too many bugs and samsung need to go away and come back with a better version
its no coincidence that the russians have had 3 versions of donut in a month

the only time i got force close issues was with 3rd party apps and it was usually the poorly made ones.

i dont have it much at all on jc6 either

alot of people reported force close issues when they upgraded the firmware without flashing.

im not saying you are wrong for wanting a better phone by the way, i completely understand why you would want to upgrade but the reason i asked the question is this

Samsungs support was the only really bad thing about this phone
The hardware was on par with competetors at the time of production and the only thing it lacked was memory

it is one of the easiest devices to root
it has/had one of the best screens made
battery life is on par with all other androids
it got 1.6 before HTC (apart from the tattoo)

basically as cupcake went it was a good device, the thing that spoilt it was that everyone wanted more before more was even available to other manafactures and it upset people as samsung wouldnt reply

As I said before, force close/wait menu appears because the timeout expires even for system programs (like home screen) not because same crappy 3rd party app (and btw...3rd party apps is what we are forced to use as some native apps don't work with 1.5). If I wait it will eventually work...but I'm out of patience.

If it was on par or not I don't really care as I did played with a Hero and it's a whole different story. Maybe Hero has more ram (or htc is way better than samsung at cooking roms)??

The screen was the defining factor for my choice between magic/hero/galaxy along with design and most importantly the fact that I WAS an samsung fan boy mainly because build/materials quality it's a tradition for samsung.

1. fair enough

2. we're all gutted about it, but if you look around, you'll notice a lot of similar situations with other phones, like the hero

+. what?

By "leaked samsung firmware" I understand a firmware file built by samsung for INTERNAL testing that by some mysterious "security flaws" became public with no intention from samsung for this to happen.

I was implying that this is not the case and those "leaks" are on purpose!

And about Hero....at least thas phone actually works.

well no, the hero you played with works. they hero i played with was a little flaky and my galaxy seemed stable in comparison.
its the nature of android my friend, its still an infant
there is alot of things we can blame samsung for a few things but i can hand on heart say the forcecloses i got were extremly minimal and my collegues hero suffers the same fate

who cares, point is samsung hasn't officially released that firmware - they're telling their customers that ik5 or whatever is the latest firmware and the average consumer doesn't have a clue that it's even possible to have donut on their galaxy before samsung says so, because samsung only wants donut on their galaxy when they've done coding it

also its not down to samsung. the firmware has to be accredited and tested by the carrier and pass (which is when it gets released officially)
if it hasnt passed accreditation then it means there is likely to be flaws

if it gets leaked its just cos some person in samsung cant help himself and had to give something to the community.
If i worked for them i would do the same but samsung themselves as a company would not be making a concious decision to leak it purposefully

what about unlocked phones, or whatever you call them - i'd say normal - ones that aren't affiliated with any carrier?
are they all officially not upgradable?
i know mine seems to be, since it didn't have a csc and hence nps would never update it, but not all normal phones ship without a csc, do they?
i ordered mine before galaxies with finnish locale were available (would have switched to english anyway), so i'd assume those would have a csc
