While charging my phone today, I noticed that my LED started flashing and alternating from red to green. It was plugged into my wall and I was using it while it charged. I tried searching the forums as well as the user guide, but have found nothing. I suspect this means Im using more juice than Im gaining because my battery was losing power. It also heated up more than usual. Returned to normal once I left it alone. Anyone know whats up?

All I found was a cached Google description for a thread that's apparently been deleted someplace that indicates this pattern occurs when the device is overheating, so what you noticed about the phone being warmer than usual seems to apply.

EDIT: I would have to guess maybe you have a bad USB cable/port.

EDIT 2: Just noticed you were plugged into a wall... Still could be a bad cable. If you plug a lamp into the outlet, does it seem brighter than usual?

The lamp seems normal. I just tried it again and noticed the same thing. The overheating seems to be a likely issue. I have 2 theories:
1. I am using an old motorola mini usb cable which hasn't given me any problems till now. Still possible though.
2. While charging I was browsing through ringtones on the app "Zedge". I suspect this app uses a lot of data, streaming and what not. I would think the phone could handle it though without overheating.

I'll try a different outlet and see what happens.

I would think a bad cable wouldnt charge at all? All it needs to charge is continuity, I would think it was either dirty power at the outlet or more likely the actual "charger" part is not reducing the voltage correctly. Try a different charger and see if it does it again? Was this plugged into a pc? try a different usb port or different computer.

Maybe it was going from 100% to 99% and then back to 100% charged while you were doing things on it? Was it still happening while it was sleeping? I remember someone else asking about this before and it was because he was playing a game while it was plugged in.

I had the exact same issue yesterday. I couldn't find any notifications either. The data and heating up point makes sense. I had My Tracks, Pandora, and GPS Speedometer running. All of that uses a tremendous amount of data and my battery did get pretty warm. I went through and shut stuff down, my battery cooled down a bit, then it stopped flashing. Good to know, thanks for the insight. You beat me to a post.

I too experience the heating issue with the orange/green alternating LED.
Instead of a wall cable, I'm using my old verizon Krazr car charger. It works fine most of the time.
What I have noticed though is if the air temperature is warm and the phone is lying flat it'll do it.
I just unplug, hold it in front on my AC vents and replug in.

I've not experienced with my wall charger at home.

Thanks for affirming the LED issue. I didn't know what that was either.

BTW, i'm at 2.1 leak 2 and didn't have any power hungry apps running at the time of charging.

After trying different outlets, Im pretty sure its a combination of the "moto" charger and streaming ringtones on Zedge. Also its was pretty warm in Philly yesterday (90 today!).
Anyway, its strange that this info isn't in the users manual. Overheating seems like it could cause serious problems. Then again, this is a phone, not a used car. Anyone know what kind of oil to use for a Droid Eris?

Thanks. Not sure why this didn't come up on my search. So..overheating can...uhm... cause the phone to explode....possibly near my face...unexpect....

Look at it this way, if your phone explodes in your face, I can almost guarantee HTC will give you a new one - and if you want it loaded with 2.1, you'll get it. The'll probably even gladly pay for your plastic surgery.

So really, it's a win/win situation!
