Hi guy's,
I have a Note 2, aside from a couple small issues the note 2 is quite amazing. However I have been somewhat put off on it's size for a daily phone. I saw the Lg Optimus G at Best Buy tonight and was simply amazed by it's build quality and just right size, I bought it and just set it up and WOW...problems. It was powered on for maybe just maybe 2 minutes and I went to settings to increase display brightness and I got an error message that said the device was overheated and I couldn't go brighter than 72%.

Next up is a VERY laggy UI, how can a quad core 2 gb ram phone be laggy? Scrolling through contacts and menus is downright painful, very jerky and buggy. Let me remind you that nothing is running or installed as I just took it out of the box. I did some Google searching and apparently many are experiencing overheating issues, kind of sucks as otherwise it appears to be a device that could have had a great run.

Back it goes, keeping the Note 2 until we all see what the GS4 looks like.

The purpose of this thread was simply a "heads up" the overheating and CPU issues with the Optimus G are very real, steer clear.

I've had the OG for two weeks now and there isn't anything laggy about this phone.
At times, it feels warm but I've had zero issues where the phone claims it can't get brighter I've never had the phone actually feel "hot" at all.

I would try a different LGOG instead of giving up on it altogether.
Your experience seems extreme and by no means a normal one.
I love this phone. So much stock that I've been in no hurry to root and unlock it.

Did you do the zv8 update? I was having those issues until I did it and then did a hard reset. I actually held off on the update for 2 days because, well honestly you never know how these updates are going to go, but after that, it's been good as gold. I think your turning it back in was a bit premature IMHO. I will say I'm jealous of that sweet jellybean you're rocking on the Note 2!

I think the overheating/brightness as an issue depends on how you use the phone. I notice it whenever I do anything even remotely intensive on the phone while 3G is on and active, but never on Wi-Fi or with only light 3G use. It's not too jarring when I'm indoors, but I've had it happen a couple times when I'm using the phone in direct/near-direct sunlight which is where it becomes quite noticeable. There have been instances where the brightness is forced down to something like 63%.

Hi Guy's,

Ok, well I went to Best Buy today to swap out my Note 2 because Touchwiz crashed and I lost all my apps then the screen blacked out and we couldn't get the screen back on. SO.....I got another Optimus.

While I was in the store I decided to set it up starting with my Gmail account so I could download my contacts. Within maybe 5 minutes of being powered on and using WiFi the screen flickered and dimmed. I went into settings and the brightness went to 63% and when I tried sliding the slider to brighter setting I got that warning that the phone was overheated.

BIG question to all of you, do you have a checkmark in the Eco Setting check box in the quad control settings? I'm not entirely sure I understand the wording on the eco/quad control settings. I am not concerned about battery life at all, I like BRIGHT displays and FAST lag free phones, do I put a checkmark in the box or no?

Thanks a ton:)

To be quite honest, I've tried with eco mode both on and off and I could not conclusively tell if there was a performance hit. Here is what I can say about eco mode: I was doing some quadrant standard runs with eco mode on and the processor when checking system information was throttling down from 1.5 gHz down to anywhere from 1.1 to 1.3 gHz so it definitely reduces clock speed. Some have mentioned it may even reduce the number of cores working at any given time to a max of 2. That would jive with my testing as my quadrant scores with eco mode on were in the upper 5K range. With eco mode off, that number jumped to the upper 7K range.

With that being said, here is my recommendation. I don't think the processor actually runs very hot...I think it's the radio. So don't be afraid to leave eco mode off if you feel you are seeing a difference. Heck maybe leave it on for a couple days and then turn it back off for a couple days. Also, the way brightness works on the phone, you set a base level you don't want it going below and it stays within that range or higher. I've had good results at 55% with auto brightness turned on. Also, make sure you software version is ZV8 and I know this sucks, but do a hard reset and just start fresh. My phone went over 30 hrs without charging the other day with normal usage and I'm just so satisfied with it at this point.

Anyway, I hope that helps and keep us updated.
Still, sorry to hear the Note gave up the ghost on you though...that phone would definitely be at the top of my picklist if it wasn't $200 more than the Optimus G.

Good luck

Hi Thunder,
Thank you very much for the informative response, great info. So if I put a check mark in the eco setting box then eco setting is on...right? No check means eco is off and full power is being utilized? The G hasn't faulted again since earlier when I was setting it up, crossing fingers. It is a fast device for sure, I will say this, not getting technical as I'm just beginning to understand all of this but just navigating around in the phone through various apps and within LG's UI it seems MUCH faster than the Note 2, at least my Note 2. On my Note when I would switch from contacts to keypad or launch texting there was really bad lag. This G screams.

Well it is overheated again, nothing but Youtube running on WiFi, all other apps closed. Screen dimmed and apps are blinking when I return to home screen.

Called LG this morning. customer service said to return the phone and that overheating is "not normal". It was a very short phone call, that was their fix.

Since this is the second one exhibiting this issue I'm going to steer clear of this device. Thanks guys for your input though.

How hot is "overheating" ?

Hi PB,

I guess it was hot enough to fault the CPU and dim the screen. From my standpoint the back of the device got toasty warm just to the left of the camera.

The Optimus G is a very solid built phone with a "just right" size but LG failed to follow through. Had they 1. Installed Jelly Bean. 2. Installed better camera 3. Put more emphasis on the fact that the quad core might just get a little warm and what would this ultimately mean... 4. Far better support mechanism in place. Then they would have a serious phone that would have put pressure on the Note 2 and iPhone 5, that being said, Apple and Samsung can breathe a sigh of relief for now, this LG failed.

You're very welcome. Also, you are correct, check mark in the box means eco mode is on.
I'm glad to hear you're having a better time of it this go around. It really is an amazing phone.

Oh BTW my software version states E97010o

Hmmmm...with that being the case I have to assume you are on AT&T then? I'm on Sprint so mine is LS970ZV8 so I apologize as I can't speak to whether or not AT&T has released an update for your phone yet. Sprint had a day one software updated that I neglected to do initially for the first 2-3 days of having the phone due to my mistrust with some of these updates until they've been vetted by "other users" so to speak. With that being said, I had no ill effects after finally breaking down, doing the update and resetting the phone. Hopefully, they will have a similar update for the AT&T model soon.

Ah well, sorry to hear that. Definitely can't say you didn't give it a fair shake. You going to go back to the Note 2?

Hi Thunder,

Yes I got another Note 2, all good so far. I just wished the 2 was a little bit smaller...oh well.

Appreciate all you help sincerely, I'll be over on the Note 2 board :vroam:

Once you go Note 2, you don't go back. I love the size of it (that's what she said!). All other phones are cute and tiny. I do have a vzw sgn as a backup for another phone, but haven't found a reason to really use it yet.

Friend has a G on sprint and mentioned the overheating in casual conversation, never really asked what it was all about and what settings he's running. So the overheating is real, but it's a damn nice phone. It does drain a lot faster than my note 2 when we are out doing INGRESS though. A dual port high amp charger helps :D

Gee, mine is ultra-fast, no lagging whatsoever. In fact, it's impressively quick and smooth. Also, the only time it gets warm, is after its been on, and in a pocket for a while. I think you na have just gotten a bad one.

I agree mine works incredibly quick with very little lag and mine never has an overheating problem. I do keep Eco mode on usually. But also the OP was written before the latest maintenance update came out for the LGOG, it is possible the maintenance update fixed those issues thus why I never experienced what was in the OP.

Just hoping for a solid Jelly Bean build (hopefully this month) and ill be completely satisfied with my device.

I find it interesting that for any phone or tablet that I have owned, when I read the forums there are always a few people who experience problems with their device that very few (if any) other owners experiences, and they have the same problem with replacement devices of the same model. This thread is an example... I play games for hours on mine, and have never had an overheating issue. It does get a little warm in my hand, especially if I am playing while charging, but not unusually so.

It is almost as if there is a form of karma that keeps some brands or models of devices from working for certain people.

Of course, my sample size is low (about 5 different models) so I could be seeing a pattern that doesn't really exist, but it struck me as strange enough to ramble about.

I now return you to the real substance of this thread...

I've had the phone for a couple days now and have had zero issues. I like to keep my brightness around 25% to conserve battery life though. Rooting took 10 minutes max and the AT&T bloatware was easy to remove after that. I'm also experimenting with the eco mode. Even if it turned off 2 of the 4 cores, for every day tasks that is fine with me. As for the overheating issue, I think any phone is going to get hot if you're pushing it with lots of multitasking, HD videos, games, etc. My iPhone 3GS got hot all the time; the difference was that iOS just didn't notify you about this. For $10 ($60 price match from Amazon, free $50 gift card at Best Buy with any smartphone), this phone has been great so far. If it had a removable battery it'd be perfect.
