Texting app for tablet

So I have a nexus 7, but I do not have a smartphone. Does anyone know of an app that would let me text from my tablet through Bluetooth? And I don't want an app that gives you a new number or anything like that. Thanks.

From what I saw on Google Play, I don't think there's an app out there that'll work without a companion Android phone to pair it with.

you can try heywire. Works on wifi, but it does give you a number to txt with.

If ANYBODY here has a better one, please post it. I need one also. Giving my kids my Droid 2 to use as an ipod and currently will be using heywire so they can at least txt. But I would like to find one that will also allow them to make phone calls with WIFI ONLY (gosms for example will not work unless theres a cellular service).

Why not set up a Google Voice number, and pair it with some kind of VOIP account? As it is, GT does unlimited texting via the internet

I don't think Viber works on tablets. It sure doesn't on mine.

it doesn't say on the link but will viber work with calling/txting ANY phone or only other viber subscribers? Alot of these are like that in which they will only work if the other person has the same app.

just installed viber and on the welcome screen it says "free messages and calls to other Viber users". Just as I figured. These programs are great, if all parties use the same program. But I need one that DOES NOT require the other person to have the same app (I AM NOT teaching granny how to use it, I've shown her how to transfer PC files over a dozen times and she STILL can't do it).

Even though this is a phone (droid 2), it will be used as a tablet/ipod (no cellular connection, wifi only). Heywire is the only app SO FAR that at least can send/receive txts to ANYONE free (but not without its quirks, couldn't use the last 20 avaliable characters in a txt for example, can't just keep writing and send multiple txts, have to stop, send then start a new txt to finish).

I'm mostly just want a call function incase our kids need to call us or if they want to talk to nana or one of their friends. They're only 7, so I don't have to worry bout the teenage phone factor of a min of 5hr talk times.

arej00dazed, will you not be keeping a smartphone for yourself? If you are, you could always try getting the same app set up for all parties involved.

We upgraded ours to the razr M (just waiting for delivery). My kids been houding us for an ipod, so I want the cheaper and better route (IMO) and will be giving them my droid 2 plus another one I bought cheap (twins, buy for one, gotta get the other the same thing).

I kinda figured I'd have to pay for what I want. I was hoping for a freebie, but so be it. At least they'll be able to txt for free. When they get older, I may look into paying for something cheaper than cellular service.

There is one more app I just d/led but havent had a chance to try it and that is text plus. Its supposedly a free txting/calling app.

Well if you put the same app on your M that's on their droids, you should be able to achieve what you want with little effort.
