Considering going back to ICS?

Third rock from the Sun
Okay, so the long awaited up-rev to Jelly Bean has come and gone. And as we all knew would be the case there are growing pains associated with this. For me there has not been any increase in performance and in fact it seems to be a little slower and laggier, although not much. But there are other little things that are more annoying. The biggest issue for me at this point is that my Bluetooth connection seems to constantly lose connection to my Bose SoundLink speaker. Any time I do anything with the phone - surf, text, etc. - the music just stops. And even when I'm doing nothing it hiccups or just stops for no reason. I didn't have this on ICS.

Many others have had issues related to the upgrade but I have yet to see anyone talking about going back. I'm ready to go back. The question is, can I? And if yes, then how?

I was wondering when somebody would raise this question.

I haven't had the phone long enough to compare JB with ICS and I haven't tried everything yet, but all I know is that a number of apps that were working well on my Droid X - Audible, Froggy jump, Plasma Live wallpaper, to name a few, don't work anymore. Well, Audible works, but not through the bluetooth in my car. It just plays for a second and stops.

You'll need to fastboot back to ICS. Removes all user data (apps, accounts, etc). You can find the resource you need in this thread, has an all in one utility.

What do you mean by fastboot? Does anybody see any drawbacks to doing this? If I install this utility, would it be like rooting the phone (and would it void my warranty)?

I'm not very brave. I did root my Droid X but that was long after the warranty expired.

I wonder if Moto will address the issues and issue bug fixes. You always give up something when you are the guinea pigs of some new system and the latest and greatest always seems to initially land with a thud. Is it even possible to permanently stave off the upgrade to JB anyway?

Some of the issues seem to be memory (lack of) related as a reboot temporarily fixes them. I really wish Moto had gone with 2 gb of RAM instead of just the 1, but who knows for sure. I might do a factory wipe (again) and this time just re-install the programs that I absolutely use all the time and even then just a couple at a time. The temptation with these phones is to just load them up with programs that sound cool but then you never use. At that is what I do - very guilty of that!

I guess I'll give it time and see what happens. So far most of the issues are relatively minor. I have found that I'm getting generally better performance with Nova launcher over the stock one which I had gone back to. I just really miss the Circles Widget. I know there is an after market clone that you can use but it's not the same.

I feel the same way, and am trying out nova - which so far is better than stock. And like you, I really like the circles clock, and wish I could keep it with nova.

Have you ever used RSD Lite? Or SBF'd? Thats what we did on the X, but you may not have if you werent installing ROMs. Essentially, remember how your phone came from the factory? Thats what this utility does. Plug it in, hit start, and in 5 or so minutes, itll be flashed back to factory stock. No Jelly Bean, no user data, none of it. It's a very straightforward process, all you have to do it set it into fastboot mode (volume up+power from phone off) and then select AP Fastboot, and your phone is ready. Plug it in, make sure you have the drivers for your phone installed, and hit start.

Also it does NOT void your warranty. But if you have rooted, there's no way to get rid of root evidence.

I rooted on the X but didn't install any ROMs.
Another thing... if I use this utility to flash back to ICS, won't it keep notifying me to install the update? How would I turn that off? I remember with the X after I rooted it kept telling me to update, but I wasn't able to. I eventually found out from the forums how to turn off the notification but I don't remember how.

Yeah you'll keep getting the notification, no idea on how to turn it off though. I haven't seen anything about that anywhere unfortunately.

so reverting back to ics will not void warranty but rooting will?

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure that fastbooting will not void your warranty, but I'm more around 95%. I've sent in my rooted Droid X before and never had an issue.

Hello Xelios,

I tried running the DROID RAZR UTILITY 1.10 and followed the directions carefully, powering on into AP Fastboot mode, then plugging in the USB cable. The instructions did not say that USB developer mode was necessary, so I tried without, and then with USB debugging enabled. Anyway, the utility just sits there "waiting for device" and never seems to do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to get back to ICS.

Thanks,

CobraRGuy

Did you grab the USB drivers for your PC? You can find them here if you need them.

Additionally I was trying to help someone root their phone and another issue came up, is it possible your USB cable doesn't transfer data but is used for charging online? Try a different cable.

I have not used this utility since I've done it the RSD way but it seems to work more or less flawlessly for the people I've seen use it.
