RILS wakelock

Starting yesterday, my battery life on Neatrom JB has deteriorated catastrophically. While i was getting 2 hrs 30 mins of screen time (Thanks to Battery Saving Guide), since yesterday the battery is draining rather fast. The only change I have made is that I installed the GoLauncher from playstore. According to Betterbatterystats, as of now, the chief wakelock (culprit) is RILS (com.sec.phone) which has kept my phone awake for 30 minutes. What could be causing this and how do i resolve it... Ironass, this is the cue for you to enter and post an answer, albeit a non sarcastic one.

BTW, there is no knowledgebase article about RILS wakelock...

first thing to do is to take out the battery for a couple of minutes then see if the wakelock returns.

I did as you suggested hawker, and the RILS wakelock did return at no.1 after the restart I also got a popup saying "Unfortunately, RILnotifier has stopped" ... wonder whats causing this?

RIL, (Radio Interface Layer), wakelocks can be caused by but not exclusively, poor or dropped signals and re-connections. Check that your modem and RIL match using GetRIL or, more reliably, by installing one of the Modem+RIL combinations mentioned in the Modems - Dummies Guide. Since you have tried Hawker's suggestion of forcing a re-connection to no avail I can only suggest disabling Fast Dormancy on your phone, providing your network carrier does not support it, if they do, then leave it alone, as this, "may", help lessen but not eradicate, your RIL wakelocks. Failing that you will need to find a carrier with a stronger, more reliable, signal.

That is strange indeed, because I have borrowed a friend's sim card and the signal is stronger than I have ever experienced! The modem is the one which comes with neatrom JB, xxLS6. I will check with getRIL and report back. Could it be that this is a wakelock caused due to me changing my sim card today???

EDIT: Getril shows that RIl/baseband is matching.... now what???

1. Is your friends sim card the same carrier as you are on?

2. How long did you monitor his cards signal strength for?

3. Are you monitoring it in the same location that you were getting your RIL wakelock?

Why not publish screenshots of Network Signal Info with your card and your friends card in as a comparison.

Ok here goes... I noticed the RIL wakelock only after I changed the sim card (different carrier). Plus, it will be pretty helpful if you were to tell me how i can publish screenshots here (without attaching as thumbnails). No idea how to do that

Been using that new card (with a different carrier) for almost 5-6 hrs now. Signal hasnt dropped a single bar since.

Would flashing the Neat rom again after a full wipe help?

1. Create a folder called, say, "Public", in your PC's, "Pictures", file for instance.

2. Take screenshot and transfer it from your phone to this PC folder either via Wi-Fi or USB cable.

3. Go to, say, Photobucket and sign up with them for free.

4. Follow their instructions on uploading an image from your PC. This will be from Pctures/Public that you have created.

5. Once uploaded to Photobucket, go to your Library and open the image and select, "IMG code", from Image Links box and paste it into your Android Forums reply.

OK, so you know you can get a better signal, (EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, H+?), with a different carrier in that particular location. However, assuming that you are at work, it does not follow that that same carrier will offer a comparable signal at, say, home. You must therefore find a carrier that offers the best signal in your main areas of use otherwise you will will be back to receiving slow, or no, connections in one or the other with all the attendant problems.

For instance, I can receive a brilliant signal from most of the UK carriers when I am in the larger towns and cities but only Vodafone covers most of my usage in and around the area where I live and work. This will involve you in asking friends in all locations what their signal is like and which carrier they are on. This will build up a picture of which carrier or carriers are best for your needs. As you have already discovered, going for a, "big", name without checking out the coverage first, is not the answer.

EDIT Do not bother with a screenshot now that I know it is a different carrier as this would tell me nothing essentially.

And therein lies the rub, ironass.. I know for a fact that Vodafone has the best coverage where i work (Bombay) while it is pathetic at my home. This carrier which i am using today is the best at my home, quite good at work as well, but the mobile data charges are absurdly high because of roaming (at work). So a classic catch-22... Hopefully, I will find a carrier that is good at both places. Thanks for helping, ironass....yet again

Also, do not just measure the strength of a signal, 1 bar, 2 bars, etc:, but also the type of signal, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, H+, as these will have a bearing on your data speeds as you have already seen with the EDGE signal you mentioned the other day.

Ironass, hawker, you will be glad to know that the RIL wakelock seems to have resolved itself! It is now close to the bottom of the list of partial wakelocks No idea how that happened... Thanks for helping, mates...

It has settled down after the battery pull. Often happens

Alternatively, it could be because you have spent the majority of time in a strong, for you, signal area.
