Help Jelly Bean discussion/issues thread (released Dec. 13)

Unless that 'friend' is my wife who is in bed trying to sleep while I'm taking pictures of the dogs doing something cute or stuff that I'm listing on Craigslist. This idea that people who want their camera to be silent are ALL perverts needs to stop. It's also a ridiculous notion to think that people who ARE perverts aren't just going to circumvent the stock camera app for their nefarious uses is naive at best. I'm sick of being made to do something because of a few bad apples.

Stealth cameras and silent cameras are two separate things. Look at the screenies in that market link.

Stealth cameras display a fake screen of email, a website or a notes app rather than a camera screen. Their intended use is clear. The more people that download them, the more that lawmakers and special interest groups get upset.

I hardly think that a crappy stealth camera is what you want when taking non-stalker pictures of your own dogs. ;)

There are very nice silent cameras according to user reviews.

Or because you're rooted, you could sideload the camera I suggested without installing a whole rom, something that you mentioned in the root forum that you don't want to do. (Download rom to pc, unzip, grab from /system/app, and copy over your own. Wipe caches, fix permissions, and enjoy the best camera you'll find on this phone. The dev said that he is ok with sharing.)

Anbody use the panoramic camera after the update? Can't seem to get it to work. I hit the shutter and it immediately says I'm panning too quick before I've even moved it. The black screen on phone calls is randomly back which is a little irritating. Battery life seems to be worse but it could be that I've been playing with it more than usual. I can live with all though since I still have yet to have a missing text notification. The latter seems to be fixed correctly so far. Haven't missed a work text yet which is VERY good!

I didn't bother looking at any of the links because the discussion was about audible shutter sound not being able to be muted. That's the conversation I'm having.

Is it the stock JB v4.2 camera with Sphere? I would be willing to put the effort forth if it were.

Understand. I was originally trying to separate wheat from chaff on the topic. ;)

Sorry, not sure, I'm back on ICS, but maybe not.

The features controlling compression (stock does too much) and video bitRate (stock does too little) and other image quality settings is my focus (no pun intended).

Understood on both counts. For me, the sound effect isn't a daily problem so I doubt I'll put too much effort into it. But, at some point, I will be pissed I didn't do something about it when I'm at a presentation or something where silence is expected and I want/need to take a picture. There have been a few times over the years where I was very glad I had the ability to mute the shutter sound effect and NONE of them were illegal.

After JB, I traded the EVO 3D that I bought on the first day for this 4G LTE dinosaur April release phone. But now, it should rock with slick JB, I thought. I bought an LTE for my wife in April, and I like it better than the S3, but now I hope it gets the support it deserves.

HTC Hub is gone. Can't get HTC flashlight, and my keyboard microphone is not there. Well, I got the microphone back. It's on the Sense keyboard above the period, but not on the swipe keyboard at all. My calendar appointments are all doubled, with a warning that there is a conflict. If I delete one, they both are gone. Not crazy good. The phone is cool, and I love the way it feels. JB is the first OS for this phone; I ran all the updates after purchase.

The proximity sensor issues is the one thing that is bothering me the most. It gets real annoying when I can't end a call especially when leaving a voice message and the only way to end the call is to hold the power button down until the phone turns off. Hope a fix comes soon....real soon.

You should be able to just tap the power button and the screen turns back on

So I have to begin by saying I'm not a big phone geek. I love my HTC EVO LTE but probably don't fully utilize all it's functionality.

Last week it prompted me to do a system update- I'm assuming to what is referred to as Jelly bean. So I did the update....and from I can see so far it sucks. Here's what I've noticed...some of this I may be able to change but I haven't figured out how yet.

1- My PIN to unlock the phone has always been numeric- so a numeric only keyboard has always come up to unlock it. Now that has been changed to a full keyboard which makes typing the numbers in more difficult. Not a big deal but how do I get my numeric keyboard back to unlock the phone??

2- Voice mail- when you delete a voice mail it now immediately plays the next voice mail as opposed to going back the main voice mail screen- this is driving me crazy. I've searched setting but see nothing to adjust that setting. ???

3- In notifications, before when I would receive an outlook e-mail and clicked on the notification, it would bring me to my outlook e-mail. Now, when you click on the outlook notification it brings you into the actual e-mail that is new. I would much prefer to just go to outlook as opposed in the actual e-mail.

There seem to be some others that I can't think of at the moment, but any thoughts on these would be greatly appreciated...

There are many people who do not post on forums who are not having any issues at all. typically those folks don't post up to say "well golly, the update worked without any issue.." :D

I usually have had good success with the upgrades on Android. I have not had to factory reset. 'course I don't mod my phone and have a lot of things running on it. I keep my phone real basic- one home screen. nothing on it but the Google search bar, black wallpaper sans designs or live animations. i keep my caches clean and don't install and run a lot of junk, so i've had good results.

if and when I upgrade to JB (I think ill wait until January when the update wants to self install itself) i for see no issues with it (i didn't install the ringtone fix update when it was briefly available before being pulled off the shelf).

whew! long winded post to say you are more than likely not alone...

I've been sounding off to HTC through their support/contact link at htc.com, and I urge people with feature downgrades to do the same.

I've complained about the update installer not clearing cache, and the new behavior when you plug in to a PC.

Tell them your story politely and request an update to fix this nonsense asap. If you bought the phone today with your problems with it, would you take it back for another brand? Let them know that you believe that this is affecting buying decisions.

They won't fix it if we don't speak up.

Keep the first contact clear and simple, you'll get a case number and a link if you need to add to it.

This needs to be bolded, underlined, italicized, *stickied*, and repeated over and over again. I'd love to see this post broken out onto the front page as a PSA to all, as has been done in the past. Along with HTC update best practices(back up, factory restore before and/or after taking an update - an essential part of cache cleaning). I think we, that have been around for a while, tend to take for granted information that we begin to recognize as common knowledge or par for the course. Seems like just in this thread alone there are a number of folks that don't know or have forgotten the HTC update process that we have assimilated over the years.

I'm sure that this feature was most likely brought on by scared corporate attorneys and embraced by r&d as one less thing to do.

Ok if we continue chatting on this but any more and I think we're better off with post moves to a new thread, ok?

This feature or lack there or has flip flopped a few times intentionally or accidentally across the Evo line of phones and even across updates. I will not speculate or talk about the widely supposed reasoning (I wish we could talk about the camera shutter sound without this supposed resoning coming up everytime - it lets 'them' win), think about corporate lawyers, or R&D.
It is my belief that Sprint and HTC both have a hand and "say" in this. It has been anything but consistent. HTC has stated that the door is open to us, the end user, to have the final say in this. All we have to do is speak up.
AndroidForums.com | HTC Evo 3D - Disabling Shutter Sound?
Quote from HTC: "I have noted your request for full control of this and other sounds. If enough users like yourself request this type of thing, it will be changed."
See above, in EarlyMon's post, for the way to contact HTC and report a bug or issue ^

Am I the only one with no issues to report? Both my phone and my wife's phone are functioning flawlessly for the last few days since the update. I flashed the rooted ROM and have had none of the issues that others are talking about. I guess we're just lucky.

No.
You are not the only one with NO issues to report. And NO, Joe bag-a-donuts is not the only WITH issues to report.
EarlyMon, don't these over-generalizing questions fall somewhere onto your hierarchy of post-update posts? :D
Even if you are someone with no issues to report, you can help everyone out that owns this phone by opening a ticket with HTC to fix the problems that others are experiencing, in specific detail. We shouldn't just think for ourselves as we can accomplish much more as a tightly banded community.

You should be able to just tap the power button and the screen turns back on

Most of the time when I just tap the power button the screen just flashes on then right back to a black screen and sometimes when I tap the power button the the buttons on the bottom of the phone blink once or twice and nothing happens on the screen its just black.

Hmm new issue that has popped up for me. When attaching a Screenshot I have taken of say a text thread to an MMS, the quality is degraded to the point where the text is largely unreadable. Some pictures attach fine but others are extremely degraded in quality. I know when you attach a Picture to MMS it compresses it and reduces the file size but it looks terrible now. If you want to test it the best example is to go to Settings > About > Software Information > and then take a screenshot. Then open messages and attach it to one, the text will be almost unreadable. I have not tried this with any other Messaging apps yet because I use the Stock. A small workaround I have found is to Screenshot and then Crop the area I am trying to show and attach that. It is still degraded but readable.

Mine works this way but in reality should I have to? No. Before the update when I was done on a call the second I removed the phone from my ear the screen came back on. Why are most forced to go through an extra step to place calls? The proximity sensor (at least for my phone) has been broken by the last update. :-(
