I was just given an EVO 4g that I know nothing about. I have done a factory reset on it. After trying to update it (no success) it is currently at:

Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernel: 2.6.29-789bf291
Software: 1.47.651.1

I am planning to give it to my son to use as a small tablet, but the version of android is too old to install netflix and a lot of the games that he will want to play. How can I update it?

He will only be using the WiFi and potentially GPS. Are there any specific hacks that you would reccomend for his use (like turning off the cellular radio, etc)?

How can I tell if it has been rooted already?

Thanks for your help!

Hello sir rob!
Welcome to the forums!
Lets do this to see what state the phone is in.
Pull the battery out...wait about a minute and reinsert the battery.
While holding the volume down button, press and hold the power button until a white screen comes up.
That is your bootloader screen.
Post back here the entire text that is there.
Then to get out of that screen, (using the volume up/down buttons to highlight choices and using the power button to execute the choice) high light fastboot. Choose it. You will see an option to reboot. Choose that to reboot phone back to normal.:)

Thanks! It appears the phone is not rooted and that is an old hboot version, but not to worry, I think we can update it another way.
Let me double check with someone I know and trust to find out if the file I am going to provide will work.

It is basically this....called an "ruu" (rom upgrade utility). Which is an OTA (over the air) update, in the form of a PC36IMG file that will run off of the sd card via bootloader. It's not as confusing as it sounds :p

That will update you phone, but I just want to make sure I give you the correct one. And then I will post instructions on how to do so.

I am starting work soon, so forgive my delay in response:)

I have no problem with rooting the phone - especially because of the unique use of the phone (tablet type functionality for my son). If rooting will allow me to put the phone in a more usable state for him, then I will do it.

Also, you asked about updating without WiFi. The phone is not on a service plan, so it does not get data or voice communications.

That's what I get for jumping to conclusions.

The ruu.exe will get him fully updated and reinstall the software on the phone so that everything is installed correctly.

That's the way to go. Root probably isn't needed.

I don't think the file above is the correct one though. It should be an .exe and not a .zip

Unless the file is just zipped up for easy downloading. Ill try to get to a computer soon to verify as I'm doing this from my phone

@Rxpert...would you recommend this one?

When I try to update the phone I receive this error:

I got error [155]: UNKNOWN ERROR

The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.

Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.

If I pull the battery afterwards, the phone will reboot, otherwise I am stuck on a partial bootloader screen once I unplug the USB cable. Any ideas?
