Recycling Old Phones

I currently have a HTC Hero which is rooted and have bought a HTC Desire from ebay.

I'm looking to sell my phone on one of the various recycling sites that are out there. But i'm wondering if having the phone rooted would cause any issues & mean I get less cash for my phone.

Has anyone tried this & what was your outcome?

I would unroot. What they do when they get a phone is usually just do a factory reset to clear any data out and check to make sure everything works. If they cant do that because you are rooted, they may deny you the sale.

Yeah, i was suspecting that would be the thing to do. Hopefully I wont muck it up

which makes the old phones loose value fast!

Root might add value to an end-user, if you were selling it directly to them.

I find it hard to believe that a recycling shop would give you more than eBay. Most of them resell the phones, so they pay far less than retail (eBay). I'd just sell the phone on eBay.

Subsidies do not affect old phone values at all, quite the contrary.

Because people have to sign contracts to get the subsidies, and thus pay more money over a longer period of time, buying old Android phones without a contract tied to it is actually quite attractive.

I sold my Moment for a nice chunk of change, as well as my LG Optimus S which I got for free. Oh yea, I also got a nice premium for my Vibrant too.

Subsidies really have very little impact on the values of old Android phones that have no contracts tied to them.

You really have to consider several factors of the phone. If it's brand new, or high priced, or sought after - you should check eBay prices to see whether selling it there is economically safe. Keep in mind you pay eBay and Paypal once everything is done. You've also got fraud to think about.

The benefits of the recyclers is clear when you use a reputable one, and as long as you don't lie about the condition of the phone then you'll get the money you were quoted. I've just recycled a phone through Sell My Mobile Phone - Sell Your Mobile Phone | OnBay Recycle and everything went well. It's a comparison site so I got a fair few quotes, to be honest I didn't choose the highest offer simply because the reviews i've seen over time suggest the highest offer can sometimes mean the most hassle.

In the UK there's things like Loot, Craigslist and Preloved too. Still some scammers but not as clingy as ebay.

I downloaded "Home security alarm" from google play, I fixed it behind my door and when the alarm is armed, as soon as anyone opens the door, if the password is not correct I receive a call.

What do you think about it?

that is pretty cool...

how about using the sensor.. if anything moves.. take a pic and vid.. upload to server. send me a text.

is there an app that does that??

Indeed... i thought the same thing but for that you need 2 phones:

• one fixed on the door
• one on the wall pointing to the door

the one on the door will call you as soon as the door is opened and send a signal to the other phone on the wall to take a picture of the thief.

If i find an app that does that I'll let you know.
For now i'm happy with the one fixed on the door. I'm using it since several months and it works as a charm.

It's a pitty I can't send you a picture of my alarm system :-(
I'm really enthusiastic about it also because I saved a phone from being recycled!
