David Blumenson needs help regarding Laptop related problems

Hello guys,
My name is David Blumenson.I have some problems related to my Laptop. My Laptop is not working properly and after working 30-45 minutes,it is automatically shut down and the next problem is its processing which is very slow. Will you guys please help me to solve these problems?Waiting for quick response.

Thanking you.

Hi David, I'm not a computer wiz like a lot of the folks in these parts, but I think more information would be needed. Did you make any changes lately? When did the problem arise? What is the make and model?

I have one thing to try, if you have a linux live cd (you can just download and burn one), you can boot from that. If that works as expected, than the problem is likely software. If it doesn't work, it could be a couple of things. The first is that your computer isn't 'linux compatible', that happens. The second would be the worse one that maybe you have a hardware issue.

That's really the extent of my computer repair prowess.... hopefully someone with some more experience can help ya out.

Hi David, I might be able to help. How old is the laptop, because if it's a few years old, it could be overheating. The cooling fans may have stopped or are clogged with grime, dust and dirt. That will certainly cause it to run slow and shut down. This would require a tech, if you don't think you can take it apart and clean the fans, ducts and heatsinks out yourself.

Sounds like overheating, It's rally not that difficult to get at the fan and clear out the fluff that gathers there over time. If it's a few years old, try reinstalling windows. If you're running XP, and the laptop meets Win8's minimum, get a Win8 Pro upgrade before the end of January or better still, take the plunge and install Linux instead. I can't recommend Ubuntu (any version) because of the privacy concerns over their sharing search info, including local hard disk searches, with Amazon. Mint is a very good starting point for Linux Main Page - Linux Mint as is PCLINUXOS So cool ice cubes are jealous

This is easily disabled:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

Besides, if you don't use 'Dash' you won't be affected anyway. (I haven't upgraded to 12.10 and honestly had no idea what this whole Amazon thing was about. Since Google is my friend, I did a quick search and found out. I don't use any of the file searching/indexing/whatever apps that come with *buntu, so it wouldn't affect me even if I had upgraded--when I search for files I do it at a command line. :D)

To the OP: I definitely recommend Ubuntu, specifically its Kubuntu version, which is Ubuntu with KDE as its desktop environment. I've used *buntu since its earliest days and love it.

If you can get it to stay on for long enough, try using the disk cleanup tool to clean up your hard drive. Defragging could also speed it up also. By shut down do you mean it just goes black and nothing works anymore or do you get a blue screen? You can try booting into the recovery console and running chkdsk to try and fix any hard drives issues if they exist. The command for that within command prompt is chkdsk c: /r
That command could change if your primary partition is another volume.
