Wonder if they are trying to pre-empt the April 16th Evo launch and draw news away.

There is no way the EVO is coming out on the 16th. The rumor is more info will be released on that date and advertising will start to amp up.

I do think it will be interesting to see what iPhone OS 4 has to bring to the table against Android and Web OS. I'm not exactly sure what Apple is planing because I know the 2G and 3G can't multitask, they are slow as hell with OS 3 and only 128MB of RAM. I also don't know what Apple is going to do for new hardware this summer as the iPad only has 256MB of RAM and an SGX 530 like the iPhone 3GS and I would personally want the next iPhone to have double the RAM and a faster GPU but I can't expect it to be faster than the iPad.

Correct. But if Sprint/HTC are announcing the Evo officially and starting an ad blitz and unveiling the full experience, then Apple will want to have the details of iPhone 4G out there to counter it. People recognize the iPhone name and if there is an iPhone 4G announced April 8th, then an Evo 4G announced the following week, what do you think people will think of as coming first and foremost?

Even when I posted about the Evo on Facbook, all my comments were "how is this better/different than an iPhone?"

While we know about this phone, anyone who doesn't follow Engadget and other tech sites will first hear of the Evo starting on April 16th when the ads start. If the iPhone 4G is announced on the 8th, you can bet there will be articles in the WSJ and the Times and USA Today, etc. People who were wowed by the first iPhone are always very eager to see what comes next and media outlets concerned with sales/ratings know this and play to it.

This is exactly their plan, take away the glam of the EVO media blitz and the MS event on the 12th.

They'll preview OS 4.0 and it won't drop until June/July.

I love Apple computers and currently use an iPhone, but this shit pisses me off.

They just love to have the masses salivating.

I don't want to see an OS preview and then wait months upon months for it to release.

Get used to it. Apple runs every market they are a part of these days. Their products are sub-par and other companies don't even have a chance to compete with them. The iPad already sold 300,000 units in 1 day. It's just a large iPod Touch with a Kindle on it. I hope HTC kicks their ass this year :D.

apple is only releasing a new phone to include the new features other manufactures have created to stay 'up to date'. they'll release the new phone before sprints evo cause it'll already have 4g and an 8mp camera oh and kickstand. apple will then again claim foul and file suit against HTC for patent infringement.

It's just going to be an OS preview, they generally have done this around the end of March so I really don't think Apple is targeting the EVO. I am very confident we won't see new hardware there, just like past OS preview events.
But we will just have to wait and see.

The EVO is not a threat to Apple like a lot of you think. Android is the real threat. They didn't decide to throw the iPhone OS 4.0 event today just because of the EVO. Like reallynotnick said I doubt we will see any new hardware, but depending on what kind of software changes they have planned it might help us figure out what would need to be changed on the hardware front.

I totally agree that android is the threat, not just the evo.

People are starting to recognize android (probably because of the droid marketing campaign) and if the evo amps up the marketing even more, then the android platform will be unstoppable.

It's off topic for this forum (this whole thread is :)) but you can watch on engadget. Looks like they are adding in most of the things people jailbreak for (multitasking, background changer, folders, etc). Still wouldn't go to ATT but this is probably the first time I would even consider an iPhone. Not an Apple fan in the least but they are finally catching up on a lot of the basic stuff I wouldn't do without.

Agreed.

Also did anyone catch Steve-o's rationale for their extreme lock-down and restrictions?

Ryan Block from GDGT: What about running unsigned apps?

Steve: You know, there's a porn store for Android. Anyone can download them. You can, your kids can. That's just not a place we want to go.

Glad to know it's nothing to do with wanting a cut of all those millions of apps and actually about the children. As a grown-up I'll stick to a platform where I can install whatever I like without having to illegally crack anything.
