Help Want to root nook color using ubuntu 12.10

Hello. I am new here and this is my first post. last year I installed cm7 on my sd card for my nook color. it worked pretty well but then started to get really sluggish and then finally when I tried to turn it on one day it would load to the cm robot and hang. I have decided I want to reinstall an upgrade to at least cm9.n I have an image writer and when I try to reflash the sd it gives me an error. I have tried reformatting the sd card on a windows machine to fat32. now the card just keeps doing the same thing except cm7 isnt installed anymore.I am using ubuntu 12.10 and would really rather do this with that os as I am trying to stay away from windows. So I guess my question is is there a walk through to install cm9 on my sd card while using ubuntu and is there anything I need to do to the card. Thank you in advance.

Sdcards fail and installing a rom on them will make them fail sooner. If you get more than a year of light use out of them, consider yourself lucky.

You might want to try a new card... a Sandisk card class 2 or class 4 works the best.

Sorry, I can't help with ubuntu tho. Last time I tried Linux was 10 years ago.

Well I got it installed it just all of a sudden worked lol I did format the card, I think that is what was the problem. But, as soon as I installed gapps it wont go past the setup screen because it keeps stopping unexpectedly. also im not sure if the wifi is working or not. I had it connected to my phone but it wouldnt register into the google servers. I am wondering if maybe I installed the wrong gapps?

Exactly what rom did you use? 7.2 stable? A nightly?

I'd recopy your rom and gapps and try again.

CM7 would be the gb gapps.
CM9 (which I don't recommend for the NC) would be ics gapps
CM10 (which I also don't recommend for the NC) would be jb gapps.

I didn't recommend CM9 or CM10 for the NC because I think you'll find it unusable due to the device being under powered and not enough ram. (It'll be S L O W.) BUT if you're determined to bypass CM7, you might as well go with CM10, which I would think (in theory) would be a bit smoother than CM9. Here's beta5 of CM10: Techerrata Downloads - Downloading cm-10-encore-b5-barelybuggy.zip You'd want the CM10 version of gApps too then (first link above).

awesome man...I will check that out. So what do I flash my SD card with for cm10? I did re install everything and it works great but if I run into a problem I may just want to go ahead and install cm10. only reason I didn't is because I thought maybe it might be to new for NC. Thank you for all the information. Basically what I did was flash my SD card with the image writer program for Ubuntu after formatting the sd card and then just drag and drop the update.zip along with gapps.

Settings... about... will tell you the build date or build number (CM version) of your current rom.

JB roms have "butter", which makes them smoother (in theory) than ICS roms (CM9).

I have android version 4.0.4 cyanogenmod version 9.0.0-nightly-samiam303-encore build date march 31 2012. do you know where i can find the cm10 image for my sd card?

So I installed the latest nightly for cm10 and it worked but wouldnt let me download anything so I rebooted and everything quit unexpectedly...would you hasppen to know which one would run best?

ok cool. im installing beta 5 right now. that last nightly was unusable. it ran smooth but i coulnt use any apps or anything. if this doesnt work I will probably just go back to 7.2...I love the look of it though.

ok so I installed it and it seemed to work. I rebooted and everything crashes again. im giving up for the night. but its looking like I have to goto 7.2.

What's crashing on reboot? I've never seen a device or rom that worked until it was rebooted.

well alot of things crash. something about gapps, then the clock, then email, etc etc etc. im not installing anything, i do overclock a little bit. 600 to 1000 or something like that.

sorry about the late reply. I tried ics and jellybean with correct gapps....although the os itself seemed to run great I could not download anything I kept getting an error. So I decided to just install the 7.2 rom and it works great. I even installed need for speed most wanted last night and it played almost perfectly. Thank you for all your help. Seems I should have just installed 7.2 to begin with....would have saved me allot of time but that how we learn lol. Thanks again. Oh and what clock speed would you recommend? Right now I have it set to minimum 600 and maximum 1200.

Set min to lowest (keep it there) and max to max. If it runs "OK", check the "set to boot", otherwise drop it back one notch.

awesome....I will do that. I may just install it directly on the nook itself. I think it may run more stable that way. Although I'm sure that's a whole other process....but I'm losing 8gb of memory by having it on the card.

Roms on emmc (NC) instead of the sdcard, run faster and are a LOT more reliable. sdcards always fail. Except for testing a new rom (say CM10), I can't see why anyone would want a sdcard rom.

Well I wanted to keep the nook software on it but I formatted while I was doing this install and it is old hardware so I might as well do it now.
