Hi All! I just purchased an EVO V from Virgin, I should get it in a couple days. ($150 with a 8G memory card) I have been reading through these forums and other sites about Android to learn about the OS and this phone. I have worked with Linux a little in the past, so I may end up rooting at some point. I dont plan to do that right away, I will try running stock while I learn the basics.

I just wanted to say hi and ask if anyone had some tips for a newbie to this phone. I have found a lot of sites for recommended Android apps and such, so I was wondering if there are any apps that this phone specifically benefits from having.

Thanks for any input, I will try to be around on these forums as I learn more about this phone.

Happy Holidays! :)

Thanks for the advice :) I am sure I will end up doing that at some point, I cant resist that sort of thing. I am brand new to Android so I want to learn more before I dive into that. I have read a few threads about how to root and the benefits from it.

There is no better way to learn than just doing it.
Follow Leslie anns guide and you'll be golden.

I've only had an Android for a few months now, so I'm still a newbie. Take it from me, it's nothing to be scared of. The EVO V is my second phone and I rooted, S-Off, installed Harmonia and followed Leslie Ann's guide to turn your phone into a EVO 3D before I even activated it.
Two things I would point out to another newbie ... S-Off is all about timing the wire touches and PRL could be more work than it's worth. Other than that, it's a cake walk to turn your phone from a good phone to a great phone.

Welcome... I don't know much about bloatware but I know the EVO comes preinstalled with facebook, Twitter, etc. that can't be uninstalled stock. All you can do is disable them which kinda sucks. You should be able to have admin rights outta the box for that stuff.

Anyway I really like Phereo 3D photo from the app store to take advantage of your phones capabilities. Also, amazon has a free app of the day that sometimes has good stuff so make sure you allow downloads from other sources and get the amazon app store

If every person that bought an Android phone had root access out of the box....

God help us all lol.

What they should do is put all that crapware in /data/app so it is easily uninstalled.

I had FOUR different instances of facebook in /system/app when I got this phone back in August. Unbelievable.

The sad part is 99% of users have no idea this junk is on their phone.

That's the idea, the carriers put on their value added (extra cost) apps, 3rd party vendors such as Facebook pay for the privilege so of course they don't want them easily deleted. Just look at how many people still have all of the crappy trialware that was pre installed on their xp machines a decade ago.

The EVO V is Virgin Mobiles version of Sprints EVO 3D (so 3D hardware fits the V :D). Since Sprint did a better job of "fixing" the problems with their 3D, Leslie Ann's guide offers those "fixes" for the EVO V. This is why HTC's updates may work just as well. I have no personal experience with the updates, but following Leslie Ann's guide worked for me.

A couple other suggestions:

Apps - Adfree (or Addsfree), My Backup pro, Touchpal keyboard, Minutes Checker (these were all good suggestions I got from Leslie Ann)

A better battery - Anker 1900mah will fit the stock cover, Laza 3460mah doesn't fit the stock cover (it comes with it's own) but is a beast, and I have had good luck with an eBay cheapo 3500mah battery (but YMMV)

I have read a lot about battery issues. I think I will get that 1900mah battery for sure.

No issues here, 5 stock 1750's and when I'm going out and don't want to be bothered swapping , 3 3500 extended. And obviously an external charger. :p

How long do those batteries usually last you? I have never had a smart phone, so I am used to charging my phone once or twice a week. I have heard the stock battery on the EVO can barely last 1 full day.

Yeah the days of once a week charging are over :D. Data sucks the life out of a battery, and our big bright screen pulls a bunch of power too. I can actually make a day before charging the stock battery, but I am a very light user.

Here is an estimate of the percentage of battery I use per day:

stock battery - 70%
Laza 3400mah - 25%
eBay cheapo 3500mah - 40%
