My dad and I both received the jelly bean update on Verizon last week and now neither will make a sound when we get a text message. This is not my first android so I figured it had something to do with the settings. However, I can not find anything that would solve the problem. Also is there a way to set the lock screen to show the message or missed call notification so you can swipe to the missed call or text from the lock screen?

also does anyone know of a good case that holds a stylus

Thanks.

What messenger service are you using? Are you using stock notifications or some downloaded via an app like Zedge? In Settings for the phone, do you have "Silent" selected for default notification? Do you have all the sound volumes up and not linked with mute? In the settings for your messenger app, have you verified that the notification sounds in there aren't trying to override the stock default text notification? Lastly, go to your home screen, hit volume up and is there a sound menu that pops up (I don't know what Verizon's UI looks like?) If there is a vol,ume menu, then slide the notification volume down to low and then back up to full volume.

As for you notifications on the lockscreen, you will need to download a lockscreen app that will replace the stock lockscreen. I used to have one (Simpletext maybe?) that showed notifications, missed calls and emails.

got it thanks the whole sliding the volume down and up did the trick. As far as the lock screen goes I was really hoping to not have to download an app for that. Can you suggest any good ones besides go launcher.

Glad to hear you got it working. I don't know why, but after an update the volume vets 'stuck' to mute on notifications.

As for lockscreen notifications, it has been a long time since I was on a stock ROM, that I don't remember what I used in the past. You can probably find some good input if you start a nee thread and ask that specific question.
I have no need for the lockscreen notifications. The custom ROM I have allows for me to add an LED notification of any color to any app. I always know if I have a text, email, google+, missed call, twitter, low battery, etc... just by the color of my blinking LED.
