Root [CDMA] FOOLPROOF UPGRADE FROM 2.17 TO 2.89 (desperate)

I have 2.17 on my 3D with H-boot 1.58 and I want to install 2.89 in order to use the newer custom roms and kernels. Can someone please point me to a foolproof way to do it?

Are you s-off? If so, you can flash the 2.89 firmware from post 3 in this thread:

If you aren't s-off, I would highly recommend it, but you can run the RUU for 2.89 that will update your phone and put you on stock ICS. You would then have to unlock bootloader again, flash recovery, then flash roms. The problem with this, is you can't go backward if you want to again, without getting s-off. S-off makes things so much simpler.

I am s-off. Will downloading and placing the "firmware of 2.89" fix the bootloop by completing the upgrade or will I have to do a complete RUU install?

I'll copy/paste the instructions from the first post. It tells how to avoid bootloops when flashing in that situation:

If for whatever reason your download gets corrupted, using a corrupted file can brick your phone! So use an md5 checker to verify the integrity of the file, it's quick and easy and can keep your phone safe!

1. Download File. Check md5 for a match

2. Place the file on the root of your sd card (not in any folders).

3. Rename the file to PG86IMG.zip

4. Reboot into bootloader.

5. When asked to update, say yes by hitting volume up.

6. When it's all finished, hit power button to reboot.

7. *Important! After booting up, immediately rename or delete the file.

*The presence of the file on your sd card will prevent you from entering recovery in an emergency situation. It's nothing to panic about, but if you get caught in a bootloop, you will have to manually remove the file using a pc and card reader or another phone. That said, to avoid bootloops and being stuck with no way to boot up and no way to enter recovery, plan ahead. If you are on a rom that requires hboot 1.58 and you flash hboot 1.5, you will hit a bootloop and not be able to access recovery. You would then need to remove the file or flash a compatible rom through fastboot connected to a pc.

Okay. Now with instructions and warnings out of the way, I will give you my personal preference on how to flash a different hboot that will be incompatible with your current rom without getting a bootloop and having to use a pc to fix the situation.

Follow steps 1-3 above. Stop! Now, instead of rebooting into the bootloader, we are going to bypass the bootloader by rebooting directly into recovery. Some roms have this feature built in. I recommend downloading something like ROM TOOLBOX from the play store. It's a great app to have if you are rooted. Rom Toolbox has a built in rebooter menu (with widgets) that allows this function. So once in recovery, wipe and flash the rom normally. Once finished, continue to steps 4-7.

This will allow you to do everything completely from your phone and avoid getting stuck. Remember, this is just for when you are changing hboots that will be incompatible with the rom you are already using (ie: ICS to GB). Just following steps 1-7 normally is fine for just flashing radios or switching between different GB hboots etc.

Click "show" and toward the bottom are special flashing instructions. You should read them so you can avoid bootloops in the future but the reason you are stuck is because your GB rom is incompatible with the new 1.58 hbboot you flashed. The easiest way out of this is to pull your sd card and use an adapter and card reader or put the sd card in another device. You need to delete the PG86IMG.zip from the sd card and boot into recovery and flash a compatible rom.

I don't think you missed a step. The problem is, you were running a Gingerbread rom. When you flashed 2.89, your phone couldn't boot up because it didn't have the right stuff. You just need an ICS rom so you can boot up.

You shouldn't need to run the RUU, you just need a compatible rom

It worked, either you are a genius or I'm a complete idiot but I used an old download of "cool ics rom" and its great. What ROM for this set-up is the coolest in your opinion? I tried inbREDed and liked the look but I had to use the ##3424# function and it wouldn't let me do it no matter how I set it up...strange.

Try Zr3d xl or zred.one. He makes good roms if you want a sense rom.

Hey, I found the "KING KANG" Rom real interesting but I can't be on Hboot 1.58. Is it worth downgrading the Hboot to try this Rom out, in your opinion?

I haven't used king Kang. A lot of us are using pacman rom right now. I must say, I'm pretty hooked on it. It's a lot different coming from sense based roms though. Also you have to be aware that on these AOSP roms, things are broken. They are a work in progress. To me I'm pretty hooked on jellybean and non sense right now. You can always make a nandroid! I'd say check it out!

What is the best way to downgrade the Hboot. I read a couple threads and can't decide for myself....would rather get the opinion of someone who's done it.

I think I've installed over 10 different Roms in the past two days and I found one that I REALLY like a lot. It does just about everything and fast as hell. Customizing is easy and since my phone is flashed to another carrier some Roms I've installed won't give me 3G, only 1x for some reason but this one gives me everything. Tell me if you've tried "Cool Blue Synergy", if you haven't definitely try it. I really wanted to be able to use Viper Rom but I could never get the 3G to work (not having right firmware, Hboot, Kernel or something) but I am real happy with this one now.

Not saying it's impossible, or even difficult, just that it MIGHT take a little more effort to get things the way you like. I'm running Viper right now, and REALLY like the ease of customization, but I do have issues of roaming warnings popping up sometimes, regardless of my settings.

Want to make sure you understand what I mean. I get data, just my warnings occur, no matter my settings. And only occurred in a certain area I don't often frequent (local carrier perhaps) It's more if an annoyance than anything else. Other than that, I really enjoy Viper. It's quick, with just the stock kernel, I haven't tried anthrax it ziggy's yet.

I've seen stuff about synergy, but unless updated on another site besides XDA, it hasn't been updated in some time. If you have a link for a more updated version, I'd appreciate it.

Here is the download site I used (Download HTCEvo3D/roms/TweakedSynergyROM at DownloadAndroidROM.com). I know its almost a year old but its just so much better than most of the new ones. On XDA there is a download for 2.3.4 update (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193948) but I used the 2.3.3 build for the OC ability. Its worth playing around with for a while. If you have time, run it and let me know how it compared to Viper Rom. I would also like to know what your specs are on your phone that you get 3G (firmware, H-boot, kernel et.c.), if you don't mind. [ if you try it, make sure you install the Synergy Super Wipe first then the 4ext Optimizer then the Rom-it works better that way ]

It's the main version number 1.13.651.7. That's pretty old. It may be incorrect from flashing a PG86IMG zip. I think those might change it to whatever it says in the android-info.txt but I'm not 100 percent sure on that.

I got the phone used a few month ago and neglected to check for a firmware upgrade before I rooted and flashed a rom. I'm running the Gangnam Style JB rom, but I'm not having any real problems. At this point, the only way to update would be to flash a stock rom, update, and flash a nandroid backup of the JB rom I got on it now? Or should I just leave it alone?
