Help Is upgrading from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich worth it? (SAMSUNG SGH-T989 Galaxy S II)

I liked ICS on my Galaxy Nexus and its a fairly significant upgrade over Gingerbread. The phones are roughly similar in performance so I shouldn't see an issue with functionality or speed. However, if you do start noticing issues, back up your stuff and do a factory reset. Or even, do a factory reset right after you upgrade to save the possibility of headaches later. Generally in upgrades, especially with a jump this big, stuff from your old OS won't play very nicely with the new one.

For the most part, factory resets tend to fix these weird quirks.

I wanted to upgrade from the 2.3.6 operating system to the 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. I heard from customers of that phone said that the battery drains a lot and some features don't function. Do you guys think it's worth to upgrade? Please answer this post. I want to know your guys' experience.

Hi AndroidGalaxy. :ciao: Welcome to the forums. :)

I'm going to move your thread to the T-Mobile SGH-T989 Galaxy S II forum where you can get more opinions from people with your phone.

A lot of people like ICS, others hate it and want to go back to Gingerbread (which isn't hard to do). The current ICS for our phone is 4.0.3. Hopefully Samsung will come out with 4.0.4 for our phone soon but I haven't seen anything about it.

Like Demache said, one of the best things to do to clear up problems after upgrading is a factory reset. I've seen it fix people's problems but its not a guarantee. Personally, I've liked ICS and haven't had any problems. Like everything else in life, YMMV. :)

Will i lose any of my data or contacts if i update to ICS? I have my contacts saved to my SIM and some apps saved to phone, and some saved to my external memory card. How would i update from Gingerbread to ICS and would i lose any data or anything?

Download and install Kies. You can use it to update. You can also use it to backup your media and contacts. You won't lose anything unless you have to do a factory reset, which needs to be done sometimes after an update. You would then lose your apps and have to reinstall them.

Oh okay..so suppose i install all my apps onto my external SD card instead and copy all my pictures and videos to my SD card as well, and contacts are in simcard, would i still lose anything since there is nothing on the phone itself but rather on the sim card and the SD card?

Pictures and videos on your internal storage won't be lost unless you tell it to format internal storage when doing a factory reset. I think part of the apps will still be in your phone's system and it won't recognize them unless you use an app to backup and restore them.

my galaxy s2 4G was using 2.3 gingerbread until i did a software update and now is using 4.0.4 and i hate it is there a way to change back to gingerbread please help :thinking:

Hi Maty :hello: Welcome to AF

Follow this guide http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t-mobile/628449-how-odin-any-stock-rom.html Download the Gingerbread ROM and follow the instructions.

Before you do that, you might try a factory reset and see if it fixes problems you might be having with ICS.
