I have a new, 2 day old S3 model SGH-T999 (thru Tmobile unlimited everything pre-paid plan $50 a month)..and the phone shows my firmware as being 4.1.1...but I read up that 4.2 was released in Nov.....I click on software update in settings on my phone and it says there are no updates. Was the update just for the tablet?

4.2 is rolling out, T Mobile may have not released it yet. You'll get it eventually. Nexus (stock Google) devices are the first to get updates

International S3's have 4.1.2....it will likely be another 6 months before US phones receive that update...after that, all bets are off IF we ever get 4.2 (i wouldn't hold my breath) the GS4 will probably ship with it

The 4.2.1 update will come to the S3. The code is already out and working on the S3 via the XDA devs.
Now whether or not AT&T and the other non-Sprint carriers release the update, who knows? Hopefully, Samsung starts releasing updates to everyone in the world simultaneously via Kies and tells the US carriers to fv#k off. No one wants their crappy bloatware anyway.

The AOSP code is out there and running...but that is VERY different than what Samsung will push out to our phones...

As for Samsung pushing their updates simultaneously... Never gonna happen...the carriers are never going to allow it

AT&T allowed the last update to be released via Kies. This was from Dec 4th;
This morning, AT&T and Samsung announced that Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) is now available for the Galaxy S3. The final software build number of TouchWiz is I747UCDLJ3. The update, according to Samsung, will not be made available over-the-air, but is instead available via Kies.

Anything is possible, and the more powerful Samsung gets, the more it can dictate terms to US carriers. Eventually, I see them out of the loop. Similar to how Apple dictates things with the iPhone.

There is a very big difference between allowing the update via Kies and allowing it simultaneously with the international versions...

The US carriers all have their own approval processes and apps to add...they are not going to give that up...

Samsung is no Apple..and never will be
