Root Root htc desire hd

Hi guys.

Been doing a fair amount of research in the past for rooting my HTC Desire HD.

Now I have not previously done it because I am not very confident in doing so and I understand the canes of me breaking it are remote, but hey this is me we are talking about.

I'm going to take the plunge but there are so many different ways from what I read about rooting my phone.

Now since I am not confident and not very technical minded which is the easiest solution?

I have seen a few 1 click options but a few have been removed. Some seem to downgrade a fair amount but don't tell you how re install the latest version and its assumed that you have a dev background etc so that sort of leaves me out in the cold.

Im keen to root to CyanogenMod but want to make sure that when I do I also have the most up to date radios etc.

Currently Im running 2.3.5 (non rooted and HTC sense 3.0).

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have honestly done a fair amount of research but it all seems a bit overwhelming for me :-(

I just followed the instructions here ... [TOOL] Advanced ACE Hack Kit (04012012c) - xda-developers ... it all went fairly painlessly. But then my phone was shipped with Froyo (got it in Oct. 2010) so it was covered by this hack. No real advice as what worked with my phone may not work with yours ......

Hi everyone, this is my first post here... I've only been searching for information for a couple hours on this topic, but I've decided its time to root my phone to run a custom ROM. I'm thinking CM10 (assuming its compatible with my phone).

I am actually having a really difficult time with finding clear step by step instructions for rooting my phone. And it seems the link above for the Advanced ACE Hack Kit doesn't work any more.

My phone is a HTC Desire HD, running Android 2.3.5, with HTC Sense 3.0.

From what I've read, Revolutionary seems to be the best tool to use, but I didn't actually see my phone listed in the compatibility section, nor do I have any idea with to do with it once I've downloaded it on the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend reading as much as possible before going for it and rooting the phone... post back if you have any questions

I'm in the same boat as you. I hope to do mine very soon, maybe even tomorrow. I've read of other options, but the instructions for them are never really 100% clear, at least to me. Even the Ace Hack Kit info is muddled.

The XDA link has been removed from XDA because the Ace Hack Devleoper left the XDA site.

Read all the forum comments & the manual included with the Ace Hack zip file. Unfortunately the people writing on the forum are not always very clear or thorough, nor do they give much info as to what they started with.

There are You Tub videos too that don't help a lot but give you an idea of what will happen. Again very rough in content.

I think you should be okay with the Ace Hack Kit if your HD came with Android v2.2 (Froyo) originally installed. As far as I understand the Ace Hack Kit will downgrade it. IF your HD came NEW with v2.3+ installed, then you will have to do something else. The developer suggest going to the IRC forum

Before the hack kit came, everyone rooted with something called Visionary. My knowledge is weak, but DURX or Scotty would know more on this.

• AAHK is safe for ANY DHD, shipped with Gingerbread or Froyo.
• AAHK does not downgrade to Froyo. It does downgrade Sense 3 to pre-Sense 3 Gingerbread.
• Visionary only worked on the earliest Froyo builds, and did not achieve S-OFF
• The problems downgrading can occur if someone flashes a Froyo Hboot (Engineering or otherwise) on a DHD/Inspire shipped with Gingerbread. This most often happens when people use older root methods and flash a Froyo RUU, or when they flash an Engineering HBOOT, which are all Froyo. The Froyo HBOOTS are not compatible with the newer, GB shipped devices because different EMMC is used in manufacture. AAHK NEVER FLASHES FROYO HBOOTS as part of it's process, and has not done so in almost a year and a half, since when this issue was first uncovered. AAHK HBOOTS are hacked GB HBOOTS that have ENG ENG S-OFF features when combined with the Radio S-OFF resultant from successfully completing the AHHK.
• We have a workaround for devices that cannot be temp rooted (Inspire on current build) before running the hack kit.
• We provide limited IRC support for AAHK for those who have read our Web page and the Effen manual. If you have not read it for comprehension, don't waste your time trying the hack kit or bother asking for help. We don't have time for that kind of ignorance, and you don't want your phone in an unusable state. While the hack kit won't brick your phone, it can get messed up if you can't complete it. If you have read and if you are in a jam, we'll help as we are available. Be patient.
• We do NOT support idiotic Youtube videos or other people's methods, messes or posts. We don't appreciate covers on boards that don't emphasize reading OUR updated page, DOCS, and using the latest version. It's not fair to expect it.

I have & will again and again read the Effen manual, & forum posts, but some things I didn't find totally clear. Our levels of experience are all so different.

Hope to do this soon, have to do some chores first & then back up data from apps.

I REALLY appereciate your skills in doing the root kit, will add my support & encourage us all to donate to your efforts.

Actually, there are, IMO. That there are no stupid questions is a stupid urban legend. Rooting is not for everyone, and I think some computer competence and some knowledge about what the goal is are prerequisites. So much has been documented - well - that I think many questions are inane. Where AAHK is concerned - Read, search, think, try, then ask.

Many thanks for the clarifications about what the AHK does for DHD's with v2.3's!!!!

to add some to what was stated by attn1 above,the reason for the disclaimer with some hacks is the simple fact that DHDs shipped with 2.3 have something different about them that really confuses the phone when the hboot is downgraded to froyo. the phone takes a rediculously long time to boot into the OS,and back into bootloader,so recovery is difficult(but possible,tho fustrating )

for this reason,you do NOT want to use any hacks that are downgrading the entire rom to froyo software/firmware IF your device came with GB. if your device shipped with froyo,and then updated to GB,then these older hacks are still fine. i used temp root methods to manually donwgrade my inspire to froyo,and manually run the "gfree" exploit to simunlock,s-off,siuperCID,and it went without issue,but this is not a guranteed safe method for all phones.

if you are unsure what your device shipped with, safest thing is to treat it like it came with GB!

the AAHK deals with the above prollem by not downgrading the whole rom. if the device has a sense version less than 3.0,the aahk installs a signed by htc firmware package to do dowgrade only the radio to an exploitable version.

if the device has a sense 3.0 rom present,the AAHK downgrades in 2 steps:
1)to a GB sense 2.0 rom
2)installs the signed fimrware to dowgrade only the radio(as described above)

at this point the aahk runs the gfree exploit to s-off,simunlock,and supercid,and installs clockwork recovery for you,and the sky is now the limit on what you can do with your phone. you can flash roms,upgrade whole RUUs,upgrade the radio,debrand or run different carrier ruus,etc.

to sum all that up,the AAHK is the safest way to root an DHD/inspire since it makes provisions for many software and firmware combinations. older hacks that you see are likley software/firmware dependent.

last and not least,pay particular attention the bit about setting up the PC environment,as the AAHK is a complex tool,and its various steps depend on the phone/pc reacting appropriately to its commands.

windows is a lil shaky,as it needs drivers installed,and it is very affected by things runing on the PC that can comunicate with the phone(itunes,pdanet,easy tether,htc sync,etc). alot of us here will fairly strongly recomend creating an ubuntu live CD from wich you can run the aahk,as the process seems to go much smoother on linux,or on a mac(ironically )

With well over 200K AAHK downloads, I draw the line at supporting those that have taken the initiative to read and prepare. I can't possibly run PC-101 classes in the IRC channel, and trust me, that's been the expectation all too often.

Users need to take some responsibility to learn some basics before they start hacking up smartphones. If you want/can assist in that, that's your choice and you should be commended because it's not an easy task.

When the rubber meets the road and they start the hack, they'd better have done their homework as best they can. It's really aggravating to have people come into the IRC channel and ask for the passkey - a clear sign they haven't really read a thing about AAHK. That's absolutely intolerable and a sure sign the user is in trouble before they've even begun.

When people do read and still have questions/issues, that's different. We all hate to see diligent people stuck.
