So now that it's been announced that iPhone OS 4 will include multitasking...

Android fansheep will blindly suck at the teat of anything Android. No different than an Apple fansheep.

Instead of appreciating technology and its advancement, people talk about "making iPhone users cry." Please. Like you developed the OS.

I say that because no one has brought their fansheep bull into this thread, and I thought I'd say so before they did.

4.0 is definitely a step up for the iPhone and definitely has Android planning to one-up them. Whatever the next version of Android is, it's definitely going to have more features than those already rumored. Competition is great, and I just hope WinMo finally hits it big with Win7. Nothing like having a Big Three for the mobile industry.

Also, I should note that only the iPhone 3GS will be capable of multitasking and regular iphones won't be able to. So their users have a bit of fragmentation to deal with as well.

Ok, how much you wanna bet that all those sites that are just cranking out article after article on Android fragmentation won't say one WORD about iPhone fragmenting now!

Oh I love apple..sauce.. hehe

I have my own reasons why i won't by apple products. However, i'm glad apple is around. Apple has the best marketing in the world, and they have a way of making anything "cool" The iPad for example.. It's not a new idea, it's been around forever.. Nobody really noticed, and i for one have been drooling over a tablet based machine for at least 7-8 years now. Could have bought one, but they were soo bloody expensive. The price of parts has come down quite a bit so that helps, but the iPad will start competing with hundreds of other devices that will help evolve the form factor and lower the price..

anyone remember the UMPC movement ?? didn't think so .. but now even a 7 yr old knows what an iPad is ..

Apple is in another league.

Apple makes OS. Check.
Apple makes phone. Check.

Already, a plus. Decisions are made by one company on two aspects of the phone. Only one aspect left.

Carrier. AT&T.

Android. Reason for fragmentation?
1. Hardware specs
2. Manufacturer of phone has little to do with release of OS update. Carrier does.

Carriers that carry Android phones (in the US):Five.
Carriers that carry iPhones: One.

As of January 15th 2010, number of Android OS firmware versions released: Four (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.0.1/2.1)

As of January 15th 2010 number of types of iPhones sold: One
OS versions: One (3.X)

So earlier adopters of the iPhone are kinda left out to dry. After almost three years of owning the phone. G1 users? Been left out to dry once 2.1 was announced for most phones other than the G1. So, 2.1 is out for some phones, G1 users can't use it. 4.0 isn't even out yet. first-gen iPhone users are still up to date with 3GS users.

You catching my drift here?

Android is great. Google is a Goliath. But Android does not equal a Goliath as well. No one here's a lawyer. You can't say the impending lawsuit won't be Google's David. In one ruling, everything can go downhill for Android. On top of that, the Android OS is still buggy as hell. iPhone users may drop their calls. But in this day and age where phones are used more for "not calling" than "as a phone" there are other criteria in which the iPhone is far ahead.

Again, fansheep, stop to think on your own instead of what you read in articles and hear from certain members. You may not like Apple. But that doesn't mean the iPhone won't kick your phone's ass.

The Droid and N1 came out about six months after the 3GS did. The staggered releases of Apple vs Android phones just means it will be one big cycle where no one wins unless the two keep competing for market share. Taking sides and approaching the issue with a narrow mind will earn you an "F" for fail as everyone reaps the benefits of two companies duking it out.

Now I just realized this thing was moved from the Eris section to the Droid section. Not that it makes a difference, but most of who I was targeting were Eris users on their high horse thinking the Eris>>iPhone.

Will I reconsider an iPhone? Heck no! Coming from a 1st Gen iPhone, I will never go back now that I've seen the light so to speak.

The iPhone is just boring and no app was going to change that for me. I love how apple pulls something out of their arse and make it seem like it's something new when it really isn't. The iPhone has always had multitasking to a certain extent. They finally go all the way with it and I'm suppose to just "magically " feel better about it? Hardly.

I find myself wondering something, though. Do we really need a new thread every time the iPhone updates? It is rather apparent, and has been voiced many times over, how everyone feels about the iphone vs the droid. This just seems like beating a dead horse at this point.

"They changed the color... want an iPhone now?"

"Nope."

"Look... a new model number! How about now?"

"Nope."

"OMFG, its a new logo!!! I KNOW you want one now!"

"Nope."

"Holy crap, it multitasks! Now there is no way you'll still want the droid!"

"Still like my droid."

Let's face it... The opinions are never going to change, no matter how many times the iPhone is updated. Some people like the iPhone and will get it if it ever becomes available to them, and others hate apple and wouldn't change that for anything. It seems easier to me to just glance at one of the many many threads about iphone vs droid if you really want an answer the next time apple announces an update.

Just my opinion.

Hey, dont forget that the new iphone os 4 will be rocking wallpapers now. My co worker was particularly excited about hearing that. Thats a big step up.

Thought that was pretty hilarious. It's also rumored (read: not denied) they may add widgets in a future update. Unless they get a faster GPU on that puppy, Iphones are gonna start crawling pretty fast.

Hi. You make some good points. Fragmentation is truly an issue with Android but I think they are realizing that and taking steps to remedy this issue in the future. Now that Android is up and running, I'm pretty sure hardware manufacturers will be careful to ensure that their devices are powerful enough to run the most current Android OS. So, in a word, I think this will be a non-issue in the future or, at the very least, a much smaller issue than it is now.

Also, I don't think anyone is denying that the iPhone is an awesome device. When it came out, there was nothing in the market that compare. However, Apple owners just have to face the fact that it's no longer the singular leader of the smartphone pack. It's just not. I own a Droid and it's the only smartphone I've ever owned. I was with AT&T/Cingular for 10 years before switching to Verizon and I never had a stong urge to own an iPhone. I always thought it was cool but it just didn't seem worth the money to me. However, I have played around with friends' iPhone's and I'm just not overly impressed. Yes, the UI is super smooth but I don't see much of a difference between the snappiness of it's OS and the OS on my Droid. I will admit that there are some Android devices like the G1 that can't hold a candle to the iPhone in terms of UI smoothness. But Nexus 1 and Droid owners are not impressed by the iPhone's "super smooth" UI. Futrure hardware devices from Android will surely be cutting edge in terms of processing speed and GUI (Evo 4G, HTC Incredible, Samsung Galaxy, Motori, etc) and pretty soon ALL Android devices will be just as "bugless" as the iPhone (and probably have less bugs depending on how well iPhone handles multitasking). Again, in terms of UI smoothness and refinement, I think that the Droid and N1 are pretty much on par with the iPhone right now.

Sure, the games on Android are NOTHING compared to the games you can get on an iPhone and if you're big into gaming, then iPhone is definitely the way to go. But, this is a short-sighted view b/c Android's market is growing faster than any other mobile OS' and you know the games will get better with time.

No doubt, the iPhone is a great device. But like another poster stated, it's just like having a gigantic app drawer (of course, iPhone OS 4 will now allow backgrounds but still no widgets). To me, owning an iPhone is like having a Droid and ONLY being able to access the app drawer. How boring! I spend as little time in the app drawer as possible and I couldn't imaging having a phone that is essentially "all app drawer, all the time".

However, I must admit that Android does have some bugs that the iPhone might not. My Droid has run PERFECT (so far) since I got it in December. But I have seen many threads with people complaining about various bugs and issues on their phone. Some of this may be due to user error/ignorance but a lot of these complaints are legitimate. It's up to Android to tweek their OS (which they will) and manufacturers to release quality devices.

ALSO. The apps have to be coded using apple's "multitasking" guidelines. Which means all not all apps will be multitaskable.

Not only that, but what if the developer decides to employ more than one API to their application. Conceivably, an app that Steve Jobs would have only one multi-tasking API running (which is good for battery) can now have half a dozen APIs running (which is bad for batteries, because in essence the entire app will be running). Engadget already found that apps that don't have these API don't quite multi-task at the moment. They just stop.
