Root Wires for S-OFF

A few weeks ago I had troubles with S-OFF and I went onto the IRC to ask for help. I had showed them the S-OFF video someone had made and posted on here and it mentioned using a paperclip with insulated tape. one of the members of the IRC told me that that could mess up the phone( Don't remember their correct wording they used,)

So my question is what kind of wires have you guys used with success? and if you could provide pictures that would be nice. Thanks

i took a gem clip and wrapped it with electrical tape... i dont think the type of wire matters, you just have to make sure that its insulated so you dont short the phone out.

I used a standard paper clip and just wrapped it super thick with scotch tape

Me too. I did the wire trick successfully on two Evo 3D's with this paper clip, but that was only a couple of weeks after JuopunutBear became available for the Evo 3D. I had to strip the plastic coating off the ends with a razor blade though.

Don't mention you used anything but an insulated heavy gauge copper wire if you ever go to the #juopunutbear IRC channel for support or they may laugh at you.

Just use a paperclip but wrap it in tape thickly and hold it by the tape and it should work . That's what I did.

I would like to first suggest using jumper cables from your car. But if you have none, go to your spouses (I did not say wife's!) car, and randomly pull a wire from the engine bay and use that. j/k

Seriously, joke mode off, any wire small enough to fit in the hole should do. The ends need to be bare. As a former service engineer, I'll say use an insulated wire. It needs to be small enough to fit in the hole. Something stiff will not tend to snake around in there and hit another pin or cause smoke to leak out (bad!). Especially if the wire is the soft stranded type, don't stick it in 1/2", just go in enough to touch the pin. Solid core wire would be preferred, but any if you are careful. The voltage and the current flow is very minimal and it won't take much wire to handle it. Larger gauge will just be easier to hold onto and guide.

I would recommend the paper clip, but as soon as I do, some throwback from the 70's in a polyester throwing lightning bolt from his finger tips like the God of Thunder will static damage the poor phone, and I don't want to be responsible for the senseless murder of an innocent electronic device. An electrical taped paper clip would probably safer, and someone suggested in a different thread to ground yourself to a plugged in computer case, which is not a bad idea anyway.

I try the wire thing never have no luck.
Actually I try a paper clip wrap around duck tape it works perfectly.

You are wise to err on caution. There's nothing wrong with that. The absolute safest thing to use would be an insulated, solid core wire, with about 1/4" stripped off on the ground end so you can easily hold it down, maintaining ground contact on the fairly large target, then the other end striped back about 1/6" so there is less to snake around inside and the insulation holds it stiff.

Absolutely no leisure suits, no even for Larry! Anyone remember that game? It was a hoot.

never passed the test in the beginning (i was 5)

Oh, and I used a strand out of an UTP cable that had no purpose for me anymore, worked perfect.

I just used a twist tie with the ends pulled off to expose the wire. Worked great and I always have twist ties laying around the house.

I've done s-off on two phones now and both times I've used the copper core from a coax (TV/satellite) cable. Fits perfectly and you just have to strip the insulation off the ends a bit.

i used a wire from the back of a picture frame it was braided and pretty flexible so it didnt put too much pressure into the pinhole. and electrical tape.

I even stuck the wire into the pin and then touched my finger to the SDcard spot and that worked too. This isn't rocket science people, it can be ANYTHING that conducts electricity and will fit into the pin hole.

THat should be fine. As long as it fits the hole. I just took the cover off for a closer look, and they designed it well, so it shouldn't snake in and short out another pin unless you force it and it goes under the plastic funnel.

It is very unlikely you'll harm the hardware without undue force or a leisure suite.

I just S-OFF'd a few minutes ago and I used a twist tie from the bread. No problems and i got it first try too.

I had a old Ethernet cable that I had cut open for a lag switch, I didn't need it so I just cut a wire out and stripped the ends of the insulation and used that.
