I unlocked bootloader on my HTC EVO 4G. I am not really savvy and am REALLY lost. SO .. can someone help me figure out what comes next. I wanted to root the phone and was guided to the HTCdev site. Went through all the hoops to unlock the bootloader, which was not all that simple, and now I am left with my factory reset phone. SO ... what's next?

I tried to uninstall the nascar app and all it allowed was to uninstall updates. I am confused about this. I thought I would be able to uninstall the factory set apps. Any ideas. Need guidance.

Welcome uarceo!
Now that you have unlocked the bootloader, the next 2 steps to take are this:
1. Install a custom recovery.
2. Either flash superuser.zip or flash a custom rom.
Both processes are outlined in this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Click on the "show" button by the HTCDEV method guide.
Obviously you can skip the "unlock bootloader" as you have done that already.

Just go to step 2 "How to get recovery"
Then go to step 3 "flash the su file or flash a rom"

Just read carefully and if you have any questions, just ask...we will be here:)

Just be carefull when you decide to delete apps. Some are needed for the phone to function. (not the nascar app tho! :) )

Hey uarceo!

You will need to install a custom recovery. Something like TWRP.

That will get flashed through fastboot which you should be slightly familiar with from unlocking the bootloader. If you download twrp, place the .img file in your sdk-tools folder (or wherever your adb and fastboot are located).

Then to flash the recovery you would type or copy/paste:
adb reboot bootloader

That should get you back into fastboot usb mode. Then command:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-supersonic.img

Then you should have a custom recovery installed. So then input:
fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-supersonic.img

That will boot into your recovery, then you need to install superSU to give your phone root access. So download SuperSU from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Get the one toward the bottom of the first post called:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip

Place that file on your sd card. Once booted into recovery from above, navigate to install zip from sd card. Then just choose that SuperSu file you placed on your sd card and it will install. Then your phone will have root access...

This will just add root access to your stock rom that you are already on. I think this is a good place for you to start until you do more research about flashing custom roms, etc....

Edit to add: Looks like Mike beat me to it by quite a bit! I was slow on this one :p.

also i would avoid using TWRP (i'm sure newer versions might be fine, but TWRP 2.0 sort of bricked my phone.....so beware) as well as clockwork mod recovery (cwm just does not wipe well and has been known to create more problems then it is worth)

the best ones will be smelkus and amon ra 2.3

Ok... Thanks for the knowledge. The comp is not recognizing my phone. Everytime I go to fastboot mode, the comp does not read the phone. Any ideas?
try a different usb cord or a different port on your computer.
I assume you have the drivers installed?
I also assume it was working fine when you unlocked the bootloader via the HTCdev site?

I had trouble then too, I am gonna try different ports and the manager. We'll see what happens. I appreciate your help and taking me back to where I started was what I needed. Thanks!

if by manager you mean rom manager, then DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER. it will only work with cwm which i said earlier does not wipe well. so please do not use it. you should always do things manually in recovery. never allow an app to do what recovery can do you for you.
