[Verizon] How to go from 4.0.4 to most recent android version?

Hey, I've been away from the forum for awhile, but I rooted my nexus and I'm currently on aokp build 39 and android 4.0.4. So I'm wondering how can I go to the most recent android version and also the most recent aokp version or another unanimously favorite rom?? I read through some how to's and didn't see anything describing this unless I missed it.

upgrade to the newest cwm or twrp.....
download your fave rom
install

I went with the CyanogenMod 10.1 nightly and am really happy with that decision.

Like the other post said get newest version on cwm or twrp(I went with this) clear cache then delv cache. Install new ROM and updated gapps for the build you are moving to.

I'm just going to add the same caution I have in several threads lately. While 4.0.4 is a bit outdated, you _might_ want to look further into the latest Android version, 4.2.1.

Myself, I am happy with tdevaughn's 4.1.2 rom with the 4.2 camera. A full 4.2.1 rom doesn't quite have it for me, still enough issues from what I've read to keep me where I am and happy . . .

So I don't need to factory reset or anything?? Thought I needed to do so lol

I appreciate the 2 cents. I'll look more into it before I do anything. Just feel like I'm missing out on some stuff since I'm outdated lol


Also is there a kernel that people have found to get better battery life? Or Is it still "play with it and find the best for you"

I am far from an we expert but think a factory reset only occur s when your boot loader is unlocked.

I am running CM10.1 nightly with Tiny Kernel and finding both to be stable.

I unlocked mine same time I rooted lol so do I need to factory reset?

Pretty confident that's what I did(sorry been away from the rooting for bout 9 months). When I boot up my phone, there is a small pad lock on the bottom of the screen that is unlocked.

Yes, your bootloader is unlocked, but upgrading from an 4.0.4 rom to a 4.x.x rom will entail doing a factory data reset. Actually, I always do a factory data reset whenever I flash a new rom, even if they are both the same android version, or even when upgrading from an earlier version of the same rom.

Another thing to consider also when upgrading from 4.0.4 to 4.x.x is that since you are coming from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, you will want to flash the Jelly Bean bootloader as well during the process. Failure to do so has given folks problems. So, the short list would go like this, while in recovery:

Create a Nandroid backup
flash Jelly Bean bootloader
wipe data/cache
format /system just for good measure
flash rom
flash gapps (unless they're included in the rom, very, very rare)
reboot phone
profit

Well I tried last night after I found what was a download of jelly bean and the gapps. I put cm10.1 on and the gapps and it basically bricked my phone last night...

It would boot up a but only say "unfortunately setup wizard has stopped" or something like that and also "unfortunately Google frame service has stopped" that's not EXACTLY what it said but something like that. So I used my root tool kit and unrooted back to stock cause I couldn't figure out what happen. And also ALL my info was gone. There were 3 files when I selected "install from SD card".

What exactly did you do? I always check the MD5 against what is shown next to the link because there is always a chance that the download is corrupted. I'm assuming you have a custom recovery already.

When flashing a new ROM I always:

Wipe data/Factory Reset

Flash ROM

Flash Gapps

Reboot.

Also, if you're using Wug's Toolkit I'm fairly certain you can get it to stock 4.1.1.

Yes I'm 100% stock unlocked right now on 4.1.1. And I did exactly what you just said. I'm going to try rooting on this stock ROM tonight and flash jellybean 4.2.1 and cm10.1 and all the gapps needed

Two things I should mention here. You _might_ want to rethink going to a rom based on android 4.2.1 as you have found that 4.2.1 creates all those wonky directories on your phone. I am sticking with a rom based on 4.1.2 since it is still Jelly Bean and the only cool thing I found in 4.2 was the camera, which was easily installed on my 4.1.2 rom.

However, if you insist on going all the way to a 4.2.1 rom, make sure you have the latest custom recovery of your choosing installed first, then things should go much better.

You scare me a little when you say flash jellybean 4.2.1 and cm10.1, just to be clear, you flash cm10.1 and this IS jellybean 4.2.1. So from where you are now you would boot into recovery (I like CWM), wipe data/factory reset, flash the latest CM10.1 nightly, then flash the 12-12-12 gapps, then reboot.
