Root Tablet Development

Hey gang!

First off I'd like to say that Im new here to the Nex7 forums here on the site. I am a regular poster over at the ZTE Warp (N860) part of the site and I've developed a rom for that device and it runs great! Anyway I wanted to get some info on developing for the tablet. With my phone I used a stock rom as a base and worked from there in dsixda's kitchen. Is there anything or any programs I would need to utilize to get started with my own project for my newly aquired tablet? Any assistance or guidance would be great. Im eager to learn and have a fair bit of knowledge on the android os. Thanks in advance and im looking forward to meeting alot of you and hope to talk to many of you soon!

Id say the standard dev environment... i just got a nexus 7 to start into deving for android (right now just phone style apps) but read a chapter or two for tablets and there isnt a whole lot of difference, just utilize the screen more (using fragments, i think is what they are called)

I might have completely wrong turned what you were after tho

The great thing about a nexus device is that its running pure AOSP android goodness.

You don't need a kitchen or anything like that, you can build and modify straight from google's own source! This takes some getting used to as far as getting your build environment set up, but its much closer to "real" development.

Beware when downloading the android source. . . it. . . is. . . HUUUUUUGGGGEEEE

My classes start next week so i plan to try and download it just to play with it, i trust i can just download it from Mac and pop it into a linux VM or something later (or skip that and just compile it on mac, i dont know)

They have a tool that'll compile it on a Mac as well.

Another recommendation if you want to get the source would be to look here as this will walk you through setting up a build environment for Linux or Mac

I had downloaded the source for android awhile back and I remember it was real big can't remember how big it was. Thanks for the reading material I'm definitely gonna put that to good use. I appreciate all the help and suggestions so hopefully when I get a good ROM running I'll share it with you guys

I just ordered a 2011 Mac Mini to use for a dev pc. Probably slower than my i7/raid laptop, but don't want to dual boot the laptop.
