Help 42 Days In, Prognosis: The HTC ONE V Is Pure Garbage

So basically, after using this phone for a little over a month, I've decided it's a piece of junk. NOTHING works right on this phone. It's slow, freezes up constantly, requires reboots several times a week, and just plain performs poorly. No apps function properly on this device. Widgets are not being updated, and see freezing in time. My music widgets get stuck displaying a certain song and never change, my clock widgets freeze in a certain time and never change, requiring them to be removed and reapplied. All different apps that work fine on my other devices. I once had an old LG OPTIMUS with the same 1ghz speed processor, but an older chip, which was considerably faster with FAR fewer freezes and less lag.

All in all, my third HTC device, and my third bad experience with HTC. I have not tried a ONE X, maybe it's just their cheaper phones that are bad. But honestly, I don't want to. But sticking to the ONE V, my opinion is that it is not even worth the $50 I reluctantly spent on it. That's my rant. Done for now. Bye!

Wow. Sorry your experience was so bad. I've had mine about two weeks now with absolutely NONE of the issues you mention. In fact, due to recent illness which had me on bed rest for several days, my HTC One V got a very intense workout with absolutely no problem. I came out of the experience impressed with the capability of the phone and was thrilled that it proved to be such a good entertainment device and connection to the office while I was incapacitated. I was convinced I had spent my $100 very well. Hope you find the device you need.

2 weeks in I probably would have said it was ok. In fact, I made a post in this very forum remarking that I was quite pleased with it. That was only a few days to a week in I think. But the more I use it, the worse it performs. Now that I've loaded some apps on, and taken a lot of pictures and some videos, it's slowed down a lot. Whenever I am doing more than very light internet browsing, or watching YouTube, when I go back to the home screen it is blank and has to load for7 to 10 seconds. As if it had to completely stop the HTC sense launcher itself to be able to handle what I was doing.

I have not had as bad experience as you but i would not call it a good one. Stock the phone seems very laggy. It seems you have to root and rom just to make it as smooth as a phone with the same or less specs. I also seem to have a problem with the camera and battery. Overall i am not that impressed with the phone, especially since i bought the phone a week or two after it came out and i payed 180 dollars for it before tax.

I haven't had too many problems with apps not working, but I have had the phone freeze on me a few times. My biggest problem with this phone is just that its ridiculously slow. Sometimes even just typing something results in serious lag that makes it hard to even type. I realize it's an entry level phone, but you'd be better off getting an older phone that performs faster than this.

On my old lg optimus q from straight talk, and I'm not saying that was a great phone, but it didnt have the issues this has. It had only a 3mp camera with no flash, 3.2 inch screen...but the same 1ghz processor performed much better. I could multitask with no issues. I was listening to mp3s while playing angry birds, no lag at all.

On this phone, if just music is playing, the phone is almost crippled. I cant even browse or type without crippling lag. The lower specs don't justify the terrible performance. The phone is just bad. I was out today and tried to look at a pic on facebook, it simply wouldnt load at all. Never loaded, so i had to use my gfs phone, which is also on Virgin Mobile, so their slow speed was not the culprit.

Interesting comments. I've had the phone about 2 weeks, and I haven't had any problems. I"m just about to the point of being satisfied because I was going to give the LG Optimus V to my father.

I will say that it's not as fast as I thought it would be. But that's not the reason I bought it. I bought it primarily because I needed a phone with more internal memory than what the LG Optimus V had.

That said, I would make the comment that I don't use that many apps at all. And if I was buying a phone for it's ability to use applications and run programs, I would probably be spending more.

Ditched it. Phone was junk. I bought a new virgin mobile phone. Upon swapping phones,I turned on my new one and had a phantom voice mail notification that would not go away. Went through a day on the phone with customer care, was assured it was the phone NOT the account, and was told to take it back and exchange it. I was weary, but did it anyways, just to have the same problem. This time while the technician was messing with my account she screwed something up royally and it began telling me I was not authorized to make calls. She said it was not her fault and there was nothing she could do. She would escalate the issue and I would hear back in a few days. With no service at all.

I told her that was unacceptable and I wanted her to create a new account for me with a new number since she screwed mine up. She said if she made a new account I would have to pay the monthly fee again. I told her that was ridiculous and to transfer me to a supervisor who could waive the fee. She refused to transfer me. Needless to say, I returned the new phone and switched to a different carrier. Virgin is horrendous and I will never go back to them.

I've had this phone since May, & I agree with the above comments. This phone is just a big pile of poo. The more stuff you put on it the worse it gets. Sometimes it just flies along, but most of the time it doesnt.

I rooted and tweaked quite a bit, returned to stock, and nothing helped. Laggy. The revelation came when I bought an Evo V4g. The moment I linked on 3g (and only 3g, no wifi or 4g), the browsing experience was much better than on the One V. Everyone complains about the slowness of Sprint/Virgin 3g, and I agree, but the issue was much improved with the Evo V. I don't know if it is a radio issue, or simply the browser is better (but I tried several browsers on the One V and noticed no difference in speed). Good enough that I am not jumping to get an LTE model, even though I know it is available unofficially in my area (Sprint store personnel showed me). Plus, I think the Evo V is a better quality phone than the Samsung Victory (old top of the line phone vs. newer midrange).

+1 to Blazin65 comments. I am a few months into using my One V. I also moved from the Optimus V strictly because of the low memory.
I find the One V to be quite good and worth the $$$. Sorry that the OP has had such a rough time with it.

I have only had this issue with sense. My ION memory management enabled 4.2 kernel with ota radio is working great actually

I'm not sure exactly what all of you expected from a 1ghz phone. The processor is over 3 years old. However the real problem is the software, as in Sense. This was why they didn't install full blown Sense in the first place. However, the full blown Sense roms actually run better than the stock cut down Sense included with it. Unfortunately development on this phone seems to have dried up.


If you are careful what you install, they can run okay, but they will never be a speed demon. Anything ad based should be avoided as you are just asking for trouble.


The reason the Evo V is so much faster at browsing is twofold. One is the processor, you don;t realize how much time the phone spends processing web pages for you to view until you get on a phone that doesn't lag doing it. The other reason is that the Evo V runs a lot of services through Sprint post paid servers instead of Virgin.

Oh I definitely blame sense. And HTC altogether for that matter. Out of all the OEMs that I've had experience with, HTC screws up android the worst. After dealing with stock android on my nexus I now realize what the problem has always been: manufacturers messing with android so bad they screw it up royally.

Like i said my old lg slider with a 1ghz single core was faster than the one v. And yeah, the evo v is faster, it has a dual core, but it's still not very good. Compared to it's 1.2ghz dual core, the lg Optimus l9 with its ti omap 1ghz dual core is twice as fast. Literally. Well, to my naked eyes observation anyways. It certainly benchmarks worlds above it too.

But all the OEM skinned phones I've used, no matter how lag free, always have other issues. Issues that seem to effect battery and things. Like Android System, or Android OS running amok. Keeping the phone awake for hours in idle mode, draining battery, wasting data. I started thinking android itself just had problems until I got my nexus. Of course it's fast it's a quad core, but it's more than that. Everything just always runs the way it should. Keep awake time in android is is like 30 min at the end of a 18 hour day. I hardly ever see android system. The os only uses like 30MB of data in the background, over a whole month! You know my last phone Android OS sent and received about 1.5GB of data in the background over a month. Luckily I was on Wi-Fi 90% of the time so most of it was on there, but it still used like 400MB of my mobile data.

I'm convinced these manufacturers are idiots and don't know what they're doing when they screw with android. Google got it right and I'm never purchasing another non nexus device again.

gotta say I agree with this last post. Had my one v for a year. I've grown to despise it. It was my 1st smart phone (if you don't include p990i which was great in its time)
Anyway it finally died a death after about 15 seconds of heavy rain & I can't say I was sorry to see it go.
It didn't matter how many ROMS I tried or stock, the phone was just rubbish.
I now have a Nexus 4 & an a happy bunny.
It's not just that the chip is old & slow, my GFs experia mini & wildfire both worked better than this phone

I may have a higher tolerance. I guess it all boils down to what is your alternative. If you have several hi end smart phone laying around, you complaint about this one. If you dont, I think the HTC One is the best I ever have.

I started out with Nokia N900; then I moved onto Motorola Triumph, then the LG Optimus V, then a brief tryst with Samsung Galaxy Reverb/Kyocera Rise/Optimus Slider in this orders, I love my HTC One V so far. It does everything I want it to do. It does wifi Skype without a problem (so does Reverb, but all the others has stuttering/miss call/wont wake up... ), GPS lock in eye blinking, surf web without a problem, and the deal breaker or maker, it does wifi tethering. It does hiccup once in the last 3 month, once, I rebooted the thing and it has not happened again. Did I try any customROMs on other phones? You bet! Both the Optimus V and Motorolar Triumph, I have to confess, I flash almost most of the available ROM on a daily basis, unfortunately, one cannot make chick salad from chick sh1t. I retired the Optimus V 1 month ago and now for my daily use, I am using 2 phones, the Motorolar Triumph (will retire this month), and the HTC One V.

What did I run on the HTC One V? Jst the stock ROM, so far, rooted and installed the TWRP 2.2, or something like that, and a few apps I use, suffice to say, 5 pages of apps and a couple of minor tweak on the build.prop (cant remember for sure, did it on the night I received the phone, have been since using it without bother with any more hacks since it works so good).

And forget to mention, it streamed media from my winPC perfectly, no stuttering/chopping/drop pic/out of sync on AV.

Again, when I compared with all the phones I used (except Galaxy Reverb which I use it for a couple of days), HTC One V came out strong. And now with some custom ROM showed up, one will start having fun just like the Optimus V, but better.

I think expectation and availability of more expense smart phones in your possession is what I see in the whole thread. IMHO, I enjoy the HTC One V alot, even before install any custom ROM

Edit: I forget to mention, this little thing came in with built-in FM radio, http://androidforums.com/one-v-all-things-root/721221-htc-one-v-has-built-in-fm-radio.html, one can just listen to radio through the air, no cellular/wifi needed! That is a huge advantage for someone that is far between cell tower and wifi is not available. Oh, sure, none of the other phones I mentioned has built-in FM. It also has built-in BT 4.0 but hidden, how nice.

Help me out here about your FM radio comment? Are you talking about the App called Tune In Radio? To my knowledge that radio is only a feed of "pre-recorded FM Radio" on the desired station. Which to me is not the same.

i had the samsung victory 4g lte phone and returned it to best buy. The htc one v is a better phone by far. Better screen, lighter, fits hand better, just as fast with ics as samsung with jb, and htc sense much better than touch wiz. Also, htc camera much better and easier to use. I will wait until htc one sv comes to vm. Right now, it is only boost, which makes no sense since sprint owns both carriers.

No. It is a real FM radio. It is disabled and hidden by HTC, just download FM radio from another HTC One S, or X or whatnot to re-enable the FM radio (or go to the link in previous post, there is a driver to download and install), then plug in your ear plug and turn on the HTC One V, you can get your local FM stations. No internet, no cellular, just an old fashion FM radio.

Thanks for the information but I've never downloaded a file from my computer and transferred it to my phone. So you're saying I just downland the file, save it to the memory card, put the memory card into the phone and open it up?

1. Root and get rid of stock sense as soon as possible.

2. IF you ever use sense again,pick a good install like myOnev 9.5+ or my sense 4.1 rom and then proceed to even debloat what you do not want from them because even they are battery drains.

3. IF you are not updated to the current hboot etc ( do NOT allow the device TO update what so ever because it will leave you using a rare few handful of roms that in my opinion arent worth squat outside myOnev 9.5+)...download and use as a daily stable my conversion to cdma of Llior's Slim Bean Rom. Its a pure gem. Battery life is excellent. Everything minus lockscreen weather works and games run great on it.

4. Leave all the other incomplete and bud ridden roms alone. No need to install anything left unfinished and have a bad experience.

follow those few tips and I will bet you will see this device in a different light.
