I see that rooting is a pretty popular thing and I have not given it any thought until now. what are the real benefits to it? because it seems to me like it is just like jailbreaking an iphone or an ipod, where it might give you some cool things to do but it ends up not being really good for the phone.

Is it really that similar or, maybe I'm thinking about it all wrong.

Thanks,

Eric

Pros:
Get rid of that nasty bloatware
Get rid of TouchWiz
Flash roms/mods/tweaks
Use all them neat root required apps
Backup user apps with data

Cons:
Voided warranty (unless it's a best buy warranty
Flash something not designed for your phone, possible brick (most of the time recoverable)

Read, read and read some more before even attempting. Research as much as possible. :)

While being somewhat similar, they are two very different results. Jailbreaking is where a user makes their idevice and breaks it out of apple's walled garden. Rooting is the equivalent of administrator on a windows computer. Normally, for security purposes, those privileges are blocked from the average user. Rooting a phone is the process of obtaining this privileges so that the user has a lot more control over their device. Some advantages include being able to manipulate the entire file structure and run apps that require root access. Some apps that are great are ad blockers, titanium backup, and stickmount. Luckily the GS3 is one of the easier devices to root and there are plenty of people here to help you if you want to progress.

Over the past week and a half or so I have been researching as much info as I can find on this to see if it would be a good thing for me to do, and the data backup seems to be a popular selling point. but, that is most useful if getting a new phone right? and If you have to "un-root" to get warranty back in order to get a new phone, wouldn't that be a pointless feature?

True, but there's even more you can do with your device afterwards as far as custom software and/or kennels to further customize your phone. Of course you will have to undo all of it to make a warranty claim, but you may never need to.

yeah. i just know that not every single S3 owner roots their phone and if it is so amazing I'm curious as to why those people stay away, unless it's just they don't know much about it or whatever, I'm not sure...it's just I don't want to risk anything, if there are even any risks whatsoever.

There is some risk, but compared to some other devices, risk in minimal on the s3. Some people stay away because of inexperience, not wanting to take the risk, or because the device is for work and thus are forbidden to do so for security reasons.

Well I am not using it for business where security would be an issue but the fact that security could ever be an issue is kind of confusing to me, lol.

Also, even though I have done research and continue to look for more info on youtube, etc. I am no professional programmer or anything and I would hate to screw it up and end up getting into a hole I can't get out of , haha.

I assume all of that can be bypassed by going over it carefully as it's being done, but still, gotta think about those things.

Titanium Backup and ad blocker are two apps most definitely worth the hassle of rooting for. I'm in the same boat as Mikestoney in the fact I rooted just for the sake of it.

Probably the best part of rooting for me is I literally never need to use a computer to do anything with my phone again. My apps and all their data are on my sd card and I can switch out modems, kernels and ROMs from the comfort of my ass anywhere I want
