Root [Verizon] Starting Root - Some questions and maybe more soon

Hey all. I have decided to try out rooting to see if I like it I have nothing against pure stock but it seems lots of people like it so I wanna give it a try.

I'm using this guide that I got somewhere here on another thread, it seems to be a respected one.

It seems pretty straight forward, everything in order and all. As I am reading thru first before doing anything, I see that on Step 3, the 4th bullet point says to disconnect USB cable. But I don't see above that where it says to connect it in the first place. I just don't want to run into any problems by messing up something so simple , even though that is a very simple question, haha.

After you boot your phone into Odin mode and have Odin open on your computer is when you plug it in.
I guess the guide kinda assumes you know that but I can understand your questioning that

P.s if Odin doesn't recognise your phone make sure you have the drivers probably install.

Thanks guys. I did watch that video a couple times but It seems a bit confusing to me and I am hoping that the text instructions will be a bit easier. I don't have a SD card at the moment, and it seems that I need one though to back stuff up.

Looking at lots of guides and vids, it just looks like there are so many ways and versions of doing it and it looks pretty easy to mess stuff up badly, which is the only thing I'm sort of worried about.

Ok, first question is do I really need an SD Card? not that I'm all that impatient but I might not have one to use right now lol. If it's really that beneficial I can wait to get one. And if i need to get one, will a fairly small one work just fine?

You don't need one, but it makes things so much easier if you do have one. It also gives you more options in case things take a bad turn.

hmm well I might head up to best buy right now and pick up the cheapest one I can find, if there are cheap ones. I doubt I will actually need one for storage any time soon so I assume one as small as 2G would be fine? not sure if they make them smaller lol.

microsd cards aren't that expensive, so that should be somewhat painless. If possible, I would push to the 4gb in order to have enough space to safely hold titanium backups, at least 1 nandroid, and 1 flashable rom zip file in case things go ugly. There shouldn't be that large of a difference in price.

Ye I would definetly recommend 4 GB minimum and I'd go for 8 but thats because I have a lot of music.
Hopefully I'll be around to help you root in case you have any issues but I'm going to bed soon but there are load of other people here fully capable and willing to help. Good luck

Just got back. Picked up a PNY 8GB class 10...hopefully that will do the job. Do I have to set anything up for it or just pop it in and start the root process via the xda guide?

Ok right off the bat haha, step 1.3, it says to download to SD card. Seems like the 3rd option is the recommended so I will download that one, but do I download it to the card while the card is in the computer, or while it's in the phone, like access the download link from my phone browser?

The way I did it, is download it to my computer, then transfer it to the sd card. (while the sd card was in the phone and the phone was plugged into the computer)
If your card happens to be in the computer, then obviously download it to the computer and put it on the sd card, then put the card into the phone.

Whatever is easiest for you, as long as you get the file onto the sd card.

There is. What windows version are you using?

When you right click on the Odin .zip file, and choose "extract", is that when the WinRar thing comes up?

You can download 7zip and use that if you like...the free version works just fine for me. I'll see if I can find a link for 7zip if you cannot.

No I had not used the 'extract' option. the winrar thing came up when just double clicking the odin item itself. and in the folder I have Odin in, it doesn't show .Zip , only 'Odin307'

if 7Zip is a better choice, then i'm fine with that, just whatever is easiest lol. I just don't know where to extract the Odin file from, it just says to extract on the guide

o.k...when you download the Odin file, it will be in a .zip file form.
Yes, you can double click on it and see the other files but they will still be in the zipped up file.
So, in order to use them, you need to right click on the downloaded Odin zip file, choose "extract" and follow the prompts on the computer to extract. Once they are extracted, you can use the files that were once inside the zipped up folder.

Let me know what comes up when you do this

well when I right click Extract, there is another option right below that which says "Extract Here" (Into the folder in which I have already put my other stuff I'm gonna need for the root). This will just save me some time I am expecting right?

Edit: I did the "Extract Here" option, into my "root stuff" folder and it seems to have worked, I can option up the minifolder thing and there are some files and stuff in there.

Ok good. Once you extracted the files, technically you don't need the zipped file anymore. Keep it though, but you don't need it

Alright cool , so right now, phone is connected to computer and it automatically installed the Samsung device drivers when connecting so that's taken care of. In my SD card folder I see the Zip file for the Super SU bootloader. On the seperate folder on the computer I have Odin extracted, the VRALEC bootchain, the VRBLK3 bootchain, and there are 2 that I am confused about that are in there, the CWM but there are 2. there is a zip file one called CWM SuperSU v.0.99 and also a MD5 file.
