Help transfer files - going mad!

I have nexus 7, use Mac and Pc. I have installed an application for my Mac to even see nexus, and succesfully with the technique 'drag & drop' transfered books, created folders.
No luck with movies - I have short .mov files organised in folders ( I imagine them staying this way in the best scenario). So, with no folders, some movies get copied to the device; once there are few folders, movies copy as they want - some do, some don't, if there are more folders created, none do.

I am also not sure which is the default folder for movies; at the moment I use 'Podcasts'. Is that correct?

Aaaa, and I cannot connect via fileexpert. My wifi is slow and I have giga files, and I don't want that solution anyway because it is mad!! I have usb cable and that is exactly what it is for - to use it.

Can anyone help me please?..

I think this has to be related to the MTP protocol used for the N7, but as I don't have one ("why not?" I hear you ask, and I don't have a good answer) I can't really help. But I reckon the best place to get help with this is the Nexus 7 forum, so I'll move the thread to there is that's OK. I'm sure someone here will be able to help

For videos, you should have MP4 files. I doubt that .mov files will play - unless there is a special player that can do it.

One way to avoid the file transfer and stuff the N7 with large videos is to play them from a USB stick attached with the OTG cable. That may be easier. Use the Nexus Media Importer to view your files from the stick. For that you need no be rooted.

not sure what app you are using for your mac. The Android File transfer works great for me. I just drag and drop my videos to the Videos folder on my Nex7.

Yep, because mov files aren't something the N7 plays natively, there will be issues transferring across.

You could try something like Airdroid to transfer? You'll need to download an additional media player (mobo or dice should do it) but if you just put the files in the root of your N7's storage, they should work fine.

Right, now it looks like I'm on the right path, thank you. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the root storage for my movies? It does look like there is most of all problem with the file structure, and secondary issue is the type.

Just to add, the movs are not large, they are short but plenty of them.. That seems to be the issue ( as mentioned earlier).

If you're using Airdroid, just click Files, then SD Card, then upload and you should be able to drag and drop the files you want to copy across.

When I say Root, I mean in no particular folder. Although, you should be able to move them into your own folder if you want, just to keep things tidy.

I don't have any mov files to try, but Dice Player should then be able to play them.

Does all that make sense?

Yes I will try once I get home later thank you very much; one last thing, could you let me know please what do you use to see your files like on your screenshot ( do they just come up that way once you connect to the PC)?
And, is it possible to point the player on nexus to a particular folder and if yes, how to do that?

That's just Airdroid. Once you've set it up, you can view your files like that via your internet browser. It makes copying stuff over much easier.

With Dice, it just scans the memory for all playable media so you get a list of videos on your device when you open the app. Alternatively, the gallery app does the same. Once copied, open gallery, select file, select player and voila!

I would really recommend to convert your files to .mp4. Not sure what program you can use on a Mac. Unfortunately the nifty program that I use on the PC (Format Factory) does only work with Windows. But I am sure there is a suitable program for Macs.

Thank you for the advice, but with all respect a contemporary android unable to play mp4?... I mean, it did not really looked like a device from a stone age? Besides, it does look like nexus has more problems with the file directory. What I am missing at the moment is the option to show to the player the folder holding my movies- I don't see in its menu ability to do so, do you know what I mean?
Ps. Mp4 works fine.

I think what WHS meant was that if you convert to MP4, they will play and copy across fine.

So stuff you've copied over doesn't appear in your gallery?

Yes the stuff copies across fine, but does not appear. It does copy, though. Then, the result is more than random, especially if the movies are in subfolders.Ps. Is there any more that nexus does not support?!

I've had problems with some photo formats that are not supported on the N7 and they just don't show up in the gallery so I go through it with the 'File Expert' Explorer and delete them. Videos do the same thing but if you HandBrake them to android format they look and play great.

Android file transfer for Mac I use as already said on here, and I can't praise it enough just drag it across into the appropriate file.

I don't bother with any of that. I just upload my files to Dropbox. Simple and easy.

If you have several devices like in your case, that is probably the smart thing to do.
