Root Root Start

Well, I have finally decided to root my phone. But I have no idea where to start. I have been doing some reading, but it is (for me) quite confusing. Here are what I want to delete, amazon kindle, blockbuster, facebook, footprints, friend stream, messages (i have handcent), htc mobile guide, nascar, news, news and weather, nova, peep, sprint football, sprint tv, stocks, teeter, voice dialer, voice search, and weather. Also any others that you say I do not need. I hate getting the message no enough storage space, when my sd card has 794mb used and 6.7gb free.

Unlocking Bootloader Failed!

Sorry it didn't work out. Here's why:

We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.
Error Code: 173.
Error Reason: Check Rule Fail with exception

ok so i read that this is most likely due to the website itself.....just to be sure you selected the All Other Supported Models option correct?

if you did then just keep trying......i have not seen this for this device but i did come across a thread with the same error and they are saying that it is the website.

That is the cause. I did an internet search using; "htcdev error 173" and it seems that it has been going off and on roughly since Oct. :( Some responses said it should be back after 24-48 hours. Oh well.

HTC Evo Hacks! - Best HTC Evo 4G, Evo 3D, Evo 4G LTE Hacks

this guy has videos and written walk throughs. i suggest you read the walk thru as the vid is rolling. Just search for your hboot version if needed. Mine was 1.5 and wasnt finding what i needed here, so i followed a suggestion to check this site out.

just copy and paste commands into the prompts. All files, (just a few) are needed. Its gravy train.

Good luck!

I didn't realize that you needed HTCdev in order to root the EVO. Is it his HBOOT version that's the problem? Did HTC lock the EVO down finally?

I'm in the same boat as you. I just switched over the Virgin Mobile and am using an EVO V. I tried unlocking my bootloader last night, and it was worse than it is today. I can tell HTC has been making progress. Last night, all the pages timed out...over and over. In the 90 minutes I spent, I was able to get to the identifier Token entry screen twice, and both times, I too got the 173 error. Today, the pages load relatively fast, and i can usually enter the identifier token withing 2 minutes. but I keep getting error 173. Error 173 is the bane of my existence.

It looks like we'll have to wait for HTC to get their act together :(

As an exercise, type this into a google search:

htcdev

You'll notice that the third result is a link to this website

Htcdev.com - Is HTCdev Down Right Now?

I find that both hilarious and sad at the same time :D:(

Finally... at 1405 23 Jan 13! We'll see how long it takes to get e-mail from there. The website was fast today compared to yesterday.

Is there a good point where I can stop? Once I get this and still use the phone:

15.you will then see a disclaimer just select yes.
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU ARE NOW UNLOCKED!!!!!!

Or will I have to continue on and finish?

did you get the unlock.bin file? if so just type the command.

if not then you will need that file to finish. in the meantime you can boot the phone up if you want. you just need to be in fastboot mode from the bootloader when you do get the .bin file and need to type in the fastboot command.

It you've gotten to that point thne congratulations :D You could stop and go back later, but you ARE SO CLOSE. All you need at this point is to add recovery and either the SU file or a custom rom. If you want to stay on the stock rom and still use the perks of being rooting then just the SU file, but part of being rooting is taking advantage of all that the developers roms have to offer. If you flash a rom the SU file will be built in and you won't need it separately.

Edit:Adding recovery will just take a few minutes and it's hard to imagine getting to this point and waiting to finish

Once you are unlocked, you can continue to use your phone and install recovery etc, later if you desire:)

EDIT: oh for the love of Pete, I got DOUBLE NINJA CHOPPED :p
