Its more or less like a theme in the symbian operating system
Only extra option that it gives u a whole lot other options!
To define a launcher, its a bit hard to say in words, try it to understand it. You can uninstall
It like any other application

At it's simplest form, it's your home screens. When you install a new/different Launcher, when you press the Home button, your phone will ask you which Launcher you want to open. You can always uninstall the new one if you don't like it. Most launchers have a lot of custom features that you don't get with the stock Home Launcher. I LOVE "GO Launcher EX". But I think I'm going to give this one a try, just for giggles.

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestion! :) I had tried this launcher a while back and then uninstalled it in favor of Nova Launcher Prime. I've tried Apex Launcher too which is very similar to Nova. After seeing your post, I thought I'd give Atom another try and I'm liking it much better the 2nd time around. It seems to be very smooth and stable so far and it has a number of unique features that I don't recall seeing on any other launcher that I've tried.

The optional Atom bar is a nice addition as well as the All Apps menu bar. If you re-size the folders 2 x 1 or greater, you can actually scroll apps within the folder and open an app without actually opening the folder. Lots of themes and icon options too. Best of all, it's FREE! Sweet!!!

I used Go Launcher EX for a very long time - excellent customization, lots of add-ons available, and regular updates. Over the past few months, though, it's gotten a bit laggy and they're being more aggressive with pushing their themes and other stuff. The Christmas animation was cute once, but the inability to turn it off really pushed me over the edge! Their version of the App Manager never really worked (nor did I ever understand why it was even necessary) - it just added extra notifications without any benefit.

So, when Nova Launcher came up a while back in the 25 Billion Downloads sale, I grabbed it. I recently made the full switch because it has most (not all, but it's close) of the functionality and customization, and is MUCH faster. Sticking with Nova, at least for the time being.

+1 with B360155 that Apex is good but very similar to Nova. Atom looks intriguing, so I'll give it a shot in the near future...

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks really nice! Am installing it now. Playing around with it is sweet! Not sure where all my widgets went. Do I need to install Atom widgets in order to see all my previous email, calendar, sports widgets??

Whenever installing an alternative launcher, you have to re-load your widgets. Long press on a blank spot on your home screen where you want the widget to appear. Tap on widgets. Scroll down the list and pick the widget you want. If you're on stock ICS, the widget list will only have icons, but if you long press to the right of any icon and drag your finger to the right, you'll be able to see the description for that particular widget.
