Form vs. Function - sheesh!

I guess it's just me, but this is why there are few "game changers" and everyone does not jump on the bandwagon.....

To make this short..I was at a VZ store, and a couple (about 20-23 years old) chose the Devour over the storm 'cause they 'liked its looks better", even after being told about the Droid's faster processor, os 2.1, navigation, voice to text, larger screen.

I guess its just me, but I don't get it. I DO understand the appeal of the Eris, for example. I'm not saying that everyone wants the latest and greatest, but would you buy a VCR if you could have a DVR?

Am I missing something, does the Devour have anything more substantial to offer.

Not everybody understands everything about what's under the hood, so if it looks pretty, to some people that's all it takes.

Also, they are not as tech savy as you are and have a different paradigm of phones then you. If they knew and understood more clearly the advantages you mentioned, its likely they'd take the droid. I used to be thesame way and infact, I didn't even choose this moment I have, it just happened that my sister wanted a hero instead and let me have her moment. Now I am more compitant(sp?) In the phone arena. My 2

Esthetics sells. If they don't need the Droid's advantages over the Devour, they would look at what's better looking.

I don't condone this way of thinking, but I do like the Devour's looks... *Twit-Tweew"

I disagree with you. The example isn't very accurate either. I want a powerful phone yes, but not at the expense of beauty. I would take a less powerful device but more beautiful device over the opposite every time.

I will agree, that I prefer the looks and feel of the Devour, and the sleekness of the Eris.

Can hardly wait for the Incredible - best of most worlds

Agreed. One of the biggest reasons why the iPhone sold so well was because it was stunningly beautiful as compared to other phones. Beauty is a huge factor to a lot of people. Apple's Macbooks sell so well even though they're technically less powerful than other notebooks in their price range because their design is so clean and stunning.

I personally think that the most beautiful phone out right now is either HTC HD2 or HTC Desire (HTC has just been hitting it quite often these days)... at least until the HTC Incredible comes out, and then the HTC Evo 4G comes after that. Apple, I'm sure, is threatened that a competitor matches or surpasses in the form department.

Shame on them for liking something beautiful over someting they dont need. If the seller told them it was better and why, and they still didnt choose it, dont you think its because they dont need it?

Again, what is wrong with people liking beauty and esthetics? why do I even bother litening to music, its just sound waves, why do I enjoy fine paintings? its just random colors applied to a canvas.

It is not the young couple that has a problem, but the person that doesnt understand the impact of esthetics in a human beings life, beauty whether it be a phone or painting, or picture, anything, is probably the most powerful energy on planet earth, and is also responsible to some of the best emotions in a human being.

If I'm not mistaken, the ipod touch came out before the iphone and the first thing I thoght when I saw an iphone in person, I thought it was just a regular ipod lol. It was like an ipod you can use to call people.

A car is pure utility... a machine that transports you from one location to the other. For the vast majority of citizens, they will buy a certain car over the other for the appearance... especially if they're priced relatively the same and have similar specs. Are you one of those people who does not care what a car looks like?

Again, bad analogy. Cars are not just to get to and from work. That is just one of many many uses. Cars can be used for fun activities as well,(although newer phones can as well to a certain extent) but when it comes to chossing a vehicle for me personally, its always function first. Always.

My process of thinking is a bit different from most peoples perspective, as I base pretty much everything off of logic. However I do see the point of something looking nice, but at the same time that is all but relative to the eyes of the beholder. Fashion in general is something that has always eluded me as a concept, except for the fact people in general are not happy with themselves, and need things everyone around them think is "cool" to make them feel better about themselves. I do not expect you to understand my point of view, but at the same time is one that simply cannot be denied as truthful.

Poor analogy aside, not everyone has the same needs/wants. Why does it matter if you get it or not? What suits you should be what matters to you unless you're looking at becoming a wireless sales rep.

The real question IMO is why do you assume that others should make purchases based on your priorities?

Well, it is like buying a car but not for the reason in your analogy.

Some people only want a cheap car to get from point A to point B and nothing else matters. Some want a car with loads of torque that is very fast. Some want a car that handles extremely well. Some want a car that can haul a lot of stuff. Some want a car that makes them feel safer and places them higher up for better visibility... etc etc etc

Again, there are many different needs/wants. Otherwise there wouldn't be the variety of cars out there. There probably aren't quite as many reasons for phones but there are a number of different reasons why a person might choose one over another. That doesn't mean that the next person would make the same choice or even use the same set of criteria when shopping.

Even "function" is open to interpretation. For me, the driving experience -- how visceral the car is, the steering feel, the feel of the shifter, how it handles curves, how it accelerates and brakes, how everything is communicated back to me, etc are the matters of function that matter to me.

For others, function might mean how reliable the car. Or how easy the car is to use and how things are laid out. Or how many people and how much cargo the car can carry. We typically assume that function refers only to "practical matters" but that's not necessarily the case in all situations. Function depends on what you intend to do with the car (or anything for that matter).
