Root Looking for help in Rochester, NY

To anyone in (or near) Rochester, I'm looking to root my Droid, and I want to do it the right way and learn how to do it. My problem is that I'm kinda nervous about doing it on my own, going just on what I read. I'm hoping someone can show me what I need to do, and maybe answer some questions I've got. Any takers? :)

Assuming you are on the "recently updated by Verizon 2.1" version, you won't be able to root. It hasn't been rooted yet, unfortunately. At least to my knowledge.
You can go back to 2.0.1 and then re-root, but from reading your first post, I believe that will require a bit more steps than you may be ready for/wanting to do. you would have to reflash the old 2.0.1 back onto your phone using RSDlite. There are a few threads around here on how it can be done if you want to search for it.
I'd find them for ya but don't wanna waste your time if you are already upgraded to the stock 2.1 update from Verizon released a few days ago.

Post back though if you wanna take those extra steps. It can be done. Just might need a bit more help, thats all :)

Yeah, I'm interested, just apprehensive. Is there a 2.0.1 for dummies, with pictures done in crayon? :)

Haha...no, just with a dry erase marker...where is the guy from the UPS commercials when you need him? :D

Like, how do I know which drivers I'll need (32 or 64 bit)?

Do you have a 32 or 64 bit operating system on the computer you'll be using? That's how you know.

Also, the post that carlz28 made...he's referring to the links I provided in my previous post. Just go through the guides. They take you step by step (that's why they are there ;)).

Yet another PC question: How do I know if I'm in the "administrator mode"?

Is your account on the PC an administrator? If you are reading something that says "run as adminstrator" then you just right click on the program and choose "run as adminstrator" from the menu.

Also, to where am I installing the files I downloaded? PC or Droid?

Which files? All files are downloaded to the pc and if you need to push files to the droid it will say to do so.

Sorry that I wasn't more clear, it was the wording for step two on the instructions for going back to 2.0.1 that gives me pause. Where it says to install the files, rsd and usb respectively, are those intended to be installed on my droid or my pc? That's where I'm currently hung up.

NP...that is for your PC. The PC is being turned into a "flashing terminal" so that it can "flash" a recovery (2.0.1 ROM) onto your phone. Your phone just needs to be able to connect to the computer (and those drivers are built into your phone).

So I should double click on both files, and they should extract themselves onto the pc, right?

Hmm? Not sure what you're clicking or where your clicking it at...:)
I'm guessing you are talking about the USB drivers and the RSDLite 4.6 file correct?

Did you download the 3 files from the guide and save them to your computer?

Do you know how to extract a .zip file? You should just be able to right click on both of the zip files and choose "extract here". Then you can double click on the RSDLite4.6.msi and that will start the windows installer. Then do the same thing for the Motorola_Consumer_Driver_Installation_MotoConnect_1.1.16_32_bit_4.2.0.msi file.

I'm sorry, I'm just not sure where you are getting stuck...

Yeah, I sent Vincent a PM a few days back, and didn't hear back, so my next move was to post here, hoping someone else locally could walk me through it and answer my questions in person.

@UBRocked:Yeah, unzipping is typically self evident. In this case though, the only file of those three I downloaded from the instructions was the USB Drivers. the RSD is a .7Z file, and I can't say I'm all that familiar with that. I guess to attempt to clarify again where I'm confused, it's more to the purpose that these two particular files will serve. For example, is it my PC that needs the drivers in order to be able to push this stuff onto the Droid, or does the Droid need the drivers in order to be able to receive this stuff from the PC. I hope I'm not sounding critical of the writeup as it's not my intention....

(I don't mean to over-think this stuff, it's just sorta how I approach communication in general. I tend to be hyper-literal with wording and strive to be as exact with my word choices as possible, but on the flip side of being this way can cause me problems when listening to someone else; my wife, for example, tends to be a little more loose with her word choices, but I digress).

So I was able to unzip the USB file without any trouble, so I guess my next step would be to find something that would extract a .7z file?

Download

7zip will do the job. Keep posting the questions :D

Thank you, I will. :)

Regarding step 3: Am I attempting to get to the screen with the exclamation point, where I'm given the option to do a hard reset? I remember having to go there when I forced my 2.1 update, and I'm hoping it's the same one as it's one I'm familiar with.

No, you are attempting to go to the "bootloader" screen which is something I'm sure you haven't seen before. The only time you would ever go to that screen (at least for now) is to flash this .sbf file which takes you back to a 2.0.1 stock image.
