EDITED: My mom's home from the hospital

Lots of chaos here yesterday, and I'm barely coherent right now. The short version--my mom, who is 89 and restrained with a Posey vest in her hospital bed [at home], choked while we were eating dinner. I physically couldn't move her/keep her in a position for the Heimlich maneuver, but realized that within seconds and called 911. The paramedics failed to dislodge it and immediately transported her to the hospital, where doctors used forceps to pull the blockage out [and reassured me Heimlich wouldn't have worked]. I was with her in the ER for hours last night, came home, didn't sleep but maybe 15 minutes, and visited her today. They're keeping her because she developed aspiration pneumonia and her vitals were off. She's saying really weird things! She told the nurses that she can't feed herself--so they sat there and fed her breakfast. She's PERFECTLY capable of feeding herself. :) She told them she lives with her mother--and that she lives alone. I stressed to them that she does not have Alzheimer's or any form of dementia, and they said this is not unusual at all and it'll pass.

I'm exhausted, worried, and incoherent... Oh, I always hated that my mom had me when she was so old, but now I guess it's good that I'm only in my 50s and can handle this...to a degree...

Best wishes for you and your mom, MB!

I can empathize; I too have an 89-year old mom who has had to go to the ER for a variety of reasons over the last 8 years. My mom also plays games about what she can or can't do, and is generally losing her mental faculties. I hate seeing it when I visit her!

I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in your situation.

Heart tearing events, MoodyBlues. Please accept my compassion for you and your mother.

Thanks so much, everybody. Your warm thoughts are very much appreciated.

It's weird around here--all the cats are wandering around like "where's Grandma?!" Mom's stable now and they're planning to release her late this afternoon. Repeat chest x-rays looked good, so the antibiotics have worked on the aspiration pneumonia. I'm waiting right now for Mom's aide to get here to clean up, change the sheets, straighten up Mom's room...when I realized Mom was choking, I THREW her tray table (like they have in hospitals, it goes over the bed) aside and everything went flying. So now there are new stains in the carpet. Oh well. The least of my worries!

I think that the work of the care giver can be quite therapeutic at times. ;)

Your mother is a fortunate woman, to have you. Warm heartfelt blessings to you both. :)

...I got a call from a cousin to tell me his 65 yr. old brother went to the hospital from a heart attack. Sadly, he passed away.

Sorry to hear your cousin's brother didn't survive the heart event, saptech.

The first thing I always wonder when I hear of a heart attack death is the history of the stricken; was he dealing with it over time, and lost the battle after a while, maybe years, or was it sudden and unexpected, etc.

Either way, my condolences to all involved.

Hey there Moody.
Wishing you and your mom the best.
As Speedy said, you are not alone.

My mom is only 69 and was recently diagnosed as having Alzheimer's.
My day now starts at 3am cause that's how early she starts getting into things (exhausting) so I'm glad your mom doesn't have it.
I'm not surprised though she's saying things that don't make sense.
As her vitals gets better that should stop; it happens when the system is out of whack.

All the best to you.

A quick update: I got home about 20 minutes ago; she's being brought home via ambulance. I had to get everything ready, like putting the cats away so they won't run out when the front door is left propped open! The ambulance should be here momentarily. Mom's still saying the STRANGEST things, but the doctors and nurses have reassured me that this should pass once she's back in her familiar environment, and the stress and everything is over with.

sap, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your cousin. Such a shame at only 65. :(
