buying ebooks

I have recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1.

I would like to download a few books to read, trouble is I'm not sure what format they should be for Android.

If certain formats can't be loaded to Android, is there anyway of converting.
I have scoured the posts but can't find any info to my question.

One particular book I am looking for is "One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich" but can't find an eBook version of it, taking it the format would be suitable for my tablet

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I've never really dealt buying e-books myself, apart what I've downloaded in PDF format.

But I think problem is many e-book systems have DRM and their own proprietary formats. It's illegal to crack the DRM, and so is almost impossible to convert them into another format. I know if you buy a DRM'd e-book from Amazon Kindle, you can't read it on anything that isn't a Kindle. Same if you buy DRM'd e-books from the Apple iTunes Store, you can't read them on an Android device, they're iOS only.

It's something to be aware of anyway.

Also another thing with something like the Amazon Kindle store, it seems to be United States only. So if you go outside of the US, you can't get at the e-books you've bought? An expat friend of mine had this. He brought an Amazon Kindle e-reader with him from the States, and all it would do was just give a message saying that it wasn't available here.
