Video file extensions

Added a home video via websharing to my eris. It will not play. I renamed to a mp4 and it goes to the video player but then states it is unable to play. Anymore extensions I can use or does anyone have an idea to make it play?

you cannot just rename the file to mp4. it has to be converted to mp4.
are you running MAC or PC?
i can give you a link to a file converter that will do all the work for you

It really easy to find converters, just search "mpg to mp4 converter" and you can replace mpg with what ever the video is, like .mov, .wmv, etc...

depending on the converter however, the output file can be compressed too much leading to low quality playback.

I am using a pc with vista, any links would be great. I converted it over twice already but both sites wanted money afterwards.

Well there is a level of common sense and knowing what to look for to find the right converter.

I read this whole thread. Nowhere does anyone state the obvious, namely the allowed file extensions that Android can play. 3gp seems to be one. This is the extension of video files taken by my last, older Android phone which can be played. mpg is apparently not allowed. Is mp4 okay? What else? Yes, the AVS converter will convert but you have to know what to tell it to convert into.

This thread is 4 years old so any information you have read will be relevant to Android 2.1 or 2.2 and older. 3GP and MP4 files usually will work, although MP4 also has many subformats like h.264 and MPEG-4. Other file support will depend on the phone.

Alternatively, download an app like MX Player. This will greatly expand the types of files you can play, but resolutions and bitrates are limited by the hardware in your phone.
