Root Now you can live without fear of bricking

Finally deciding to get into the rooting scene after applying the 2.1 OTA update. So reading through this thread, it flashes everything back to stock fw but keeps everything on your SD card intact. I don't really know too much about the folder structure on the Droid or where all of my settings are kept, so I was wondering if these would all be deleted?

You don't have to delete them, but all of your personal stuff you should back up on your computer, as I believe it flashes (and reformats) the entire system. Don't worry about the folders that you didn't put there.

Also make sure your contacts are synced to google, or you'll have to put them all back in.

Good Luck!

Alright, so that was pretty quick and painless. After the flashing process, RSD Lite gave me a "Failed flashing process" status, but my phone boots up just fine and shows FW 2.0.1. One suggestion I would make is to clarify to hold down up on the D-Pad, or the volume down and camera button before booting up your phone. Took me a few reboots before I figured this out on my own.

Now as far as rooting goes, I think I want to give Cynanogen's ROM first. So I'm a bit confused by the first step. It says to unlock my device and install ROM Manager from the Market. Did flashing back to 2.0.1 do this or do I need to take additional steps?

EDIT

Never mind, this forum is pretty informative and the users kick ass.

Just tried using this method after failing to load a bekit rom via ROM Manager. After trying to reflash I got the typical 99% then fail after a timeout (Loading RAM Downloader for bootloader). Now it will only have code corrupts on reboot. I do have to manually remove the battery to get it to reboot.

I have tried flashing multiple times with the same result. Any suggestions?

Oh snap.. this worked perfectly for my phone the other day, but today while attempting to flash my uncle's phone, it hung at 92% and then came back with a result of FAIL.

Wow, I was going to ask what I should do but it seems like if you wait the phone automatically reboots and the SW completes just fine. I waited about 10 minutes, freaking out about the fact that I effed up my uncle's phone the whole time lol

I get the "Fail" message every time. Always ends up just fine.
