I am very new to all of this. I have had smartphones (this is my second one), but I don't know why. I barely use the capabilities of these devices. I have never had a tablet, but recently I obtained one of my daughters Kindle Fire and decided to "play" with it.

I got it rooted after alot of help from Drogyn. Now I am working on flashing a ROM on it, again with lots of help from Drogyn.

Through this process, I have come across many things I never thought about before. One of them is CWM. After doing some reading, I am finding that this may be important to me, as a backup for all the things I keep on my phone.

Can you explain what this really is, how to use it on the phone, et cetera?

Thanks.

I would assume you are talking about ClockworkMod recovery for your S3? (you mentioned phone, not the Fire)

A recovery for the S3 and alot of other devices is important as that is like a mini OS on your phone.

It is the place where you can make a nandroid backup (kind of like a game save, or a restore point on a computer) of your phones current state.

It is also the place where you can restore that backup should anything go wonky with the phone.
You can flash roms or kernels or themes or other .zip files from recovery.

Hope that helps a little unless I completely misunderstood your question:)

hello JustDumbGuy,

which kindle fire do you have? this way we can move it to the right root forum where folks more familiar with the device can help you out.

I have the first gen Kindle Fire, I have received alot of help from guys over there. I was just trying to figure out the generics of CWM. I was thinking it was common on all devices and perhaps just worked differently for different devices.

CWM basically is another method to assist you in rooting your device or just side loading ZIP files onto your device, while providing a custom Recovery.

It allows you to also easily make backups of your current set up in case your rooting goes bad. It also allows you to easily download certain ROMs.

Lastly, it can also allow you to factory reset your device as well as clear dalvik cache with ease.

Also I will move this thread into the Kindle Fire Root forum :)

So can you explain to me how to use this? I have, in another thread, all the process to flash the ROM onto my rooted Kindle, but part of what Drogyn gave me was using the CWM. So I was trying to get a better understanding of CWM. I can't even find it.
