so why can't the iphone multi task? Oh yeah because they "just blew it"

It's not only devices are like that, or their OS.. It's their entire concept which is the same. How many music and movies I bought off iTunes with my money and i cannot even burn my purchases onto a DVD, I must convert the files to remove DRM first...

So much freedom after spending so much.

PS. I am not a fan of flash, frankly even on my browser, if I can block flash I will (it doesnt slow my system as I got a heavy gaming platform) I just get annoyed with all the rubbish flash has to offer at times.

My issue with Apple, is that multi-tasking is not a groundbreaking invention, in fact it is simple programming, I've hd phones 4 years ago which has more functionality than the iPhone. Imagine, only last year they released video recording, very cutting edge, considering every device i had over the last 5-6 years probably had video recording capabilities

Okay so no more excuses for why the iphone cannot multitask. Even with the new os 4.0 they still do not have true multitasking. Looky at this.

Samsung i8910 HD runs 62 apps at once, multitaskers bow their heads - Engadget

Iphone/ipad owners, bow down.

Why do you have such a hard on for bashing Apple? How old are you? 10? Do you seriously have nothing better to do? Can you please describe your definition of "multitaking". What good is running 62 or even 3 apps at once when you can only do something in one at a time anyways? You think you are going to have more than one on your screen at a time on a tiny phone?

The reasons for multitasking on a phone have been long discussed, run over, and proven time and time again on this forum, and many other venues. Even apple is bowing down to this concept, as stated in their nerfed attempt at multitasking. Now you must resort to flaming/name calling.

And just to make you eat your own words, "do you seriosly have nothing better to do" than reply to my posts/threads in which you throw up false facts, call people names, and talk up blatantly bad products?

You still didn't answer my question kid. What do you consider true "multitasking"? Your samsung moment does not truly multitask either genius. An app sleeping in the background while you are using another is not true multitasking and is the same thing iPhone 4.0 will do. So what will your moment do iPhone and iPad users won't be able to with 4.0?

Actually, the moment (and all) android devices do indeed truely multitask. If you don't know the difference, oh well, I'm not helping you, as you have been nothing but condescending to most people here who dislike apple for one reason or another,(usually pretty good ones at that)

And one example of what my moment will do that iphone doesn't? Hardware keyboard.

Second? Live wallpapers

Third? I can put my music stored on my phone onto any device with a usb cable or sd card read.

So, you asked, I delivered, corrected, and now, class is dismissed.

Straight from the multitasking definition on wikipedia...

"Multitasking solves the problem by scheduling which task may be the one running at any given time, and when another waiting task gets a turn."

So again, your moment will not multitask any differently than the iPhone or iPad 4.0, you fail.

Tsk tsk. Read the iphone 4.0 release tentpoles and get back to me. It clearly states its uses save state resume state, which is not multitasking.

Seriously, who cares?

By all means carry on your debate about the definition of "multitasking" via PM, but threads like this are stepping dangerously close to the line marked "trolling".

While I can definately say there are quite a few people who care about said feature, I do agree this should be taken to pm as this is becoming less informational and more like a pissing match.

i disagree
there seems to be plenty of contradicting opinions about the iphone os 4.0's - and android's - (lack of?) multitasking and i can see no harm in discussing the definition of multitasking and its implementation on various platforms here in the lounge

i guess we have a very different idea of the definition of trolling

so a hardware keyboard, live wallpapers, usb and removable storage are benefits of multitasking now?

i'd also like to know what android can do multitasking wise that the iphone os 4.0 can't? (which is what mbell75 was asking in case you didn't notice the context of the question... or indeed the topic)

processes use save state / resume state, but the os allows applications to leave services running in the background... which is multitasking... and very similar to what android does

Is Android multitasking like how my weather widget, netsentry, 3gwatchdog, music and marketplace can all run at once, while I play a game?

yes

On my Hero I can listen to Pandora radio while browsing the web. If I get a text, I can read and reply to it without the browser or Pandora closing. Is that multi tasking? Can the new Apple OS do that?

1) yes
2) yes, afaik

If the iPhone can do what I described, I'd say that is multitasking. I don't understand the hatred for the iPhone on here though. You all realize the if it weren't for the iPhone we would likely not have the great devices we all currently own right? Apple took the smartphone and made it useable to the average joe. They then advertised the crap out of it so everyone knew what a smartphone was. Now we have a bunch of other companies making better devices to compete with the iPhone.

I'll admit I never heard of Android until I got my Hero. I originally thought about getting an iPhone but the price of AT&T's plans is what stopped me. I went to Sprint to see what similar phones they offered and found the Hero. I'm hooked on Android now and wouldn't trade it for an iPhone since I like the ability to customize my phone and the open Android market. I can see the usefulness of iPhone though, and why many people have bought and will continue to buy it. It is a great phone for people who just want something cool that's easy to use.

i think it's more the hate of ignorant people; see this thread

if apple didn't, someone else would have, it was a long time coming

I simply answered his questions to the specifications requested. Never said it had to do with multitasking. Correct?

processes use save state / resume state, but the os allows applications to leave services running in the background... which is multitasking... and very similar to what android does

Ummm, no, save state and resume state is not the same as multitasking, to the average user they probably wouldn't know the difference, but it still isn't multitasking

i didn't say save state / resume state had anything to do with multitasking

What does that say then.

And perhaps you should re-read what his question was. Here it is:

So what will your moment do iPhone and iPad users won't be able to with 4.0?

Where does it mention it had to be multitasking related in that question?

just to clarify, process != service

are you familiar with the concept of context ?

the title of this topic is so why can't the iphone multi task? Oh yeah because they "just blew it"
and this is the full quote of mbell75's question in context

still think the question wasn't related to multitasking in any way?

He should have defined it as multitasking related then.

Your contradicting your self.

geez, i didn't study to be an english teacher, i'm not gonna continue to try convincing you that mbell75 was perfectly clear about what he was asking, or that my statement wasn't contradicting itself - could we just move on with the actual topic and the intended question:

what can we do with our android devices concerning multitasking that iphone os 4.0 can't?
