Does your notification light blink for more than 5mins???

I've just noticed that my notification light only blinks for almost exactly 5mins.

At first I thought it didn't always work because I would come to my phone, not see the light, take it off standby and see I have a message or email. Then I noticed it was working but just went off very quickly.

I've heard that task managers/killers can affect the alerts and I am running Astro but using it as a file manager and not a task killer (as I've discovered they're 99% unnecessary). I am also using Handcent for my SMS/MMS messages.

Is this normal for you guys? No matter what type of message I get, I only get 5mins worth of blinking.

Funny you should mention this, I also noticed a few times that my light didn't blink when I had a message or whatever, but never put two and two together that it might be associated with the length of time it was blinking.

One thing I do know is that it can't be Astro because that's just a file/directory manager and doesn't end tasks or processes or anything of that nature. (I also have it).

Not much help, but I thought you should know I have noticed similar.

Hmmm... I had to check for that one. The reminder interval is set at 5mins. But I have not enabled reminders.

Is this non-activated reminder affecting my notifications or just a coincidence? Seems like some more testing in order.

No luck. The notification reminder did what it said and gave the notification sound after the predefined period. Which is good, but I don't want my phone sounding like it's got more messages when it hasn't. I'd just like the descrete reminder that I have unread messages.

There appears to be a 5min limit, but using the handcent reminder restarts the clock for me meaning constant flashes.

5 mins is a bit chronically short isn't it?! Oh well, another bit of housekeeping for the next update.

If I put my phone on mute during the night, I want it to flash the LED when I wake up, so I know to check the phone. My current phone does that, I'd think that was standard.

I don't usually need the LED within 5 minutes of the call/text, it usually takes longer before I glance and it needs to still be there.
Hope it can be set up that way, out of the box or with an app.

Having my Desire now, checking it IS the first thing I do in the morning. Would still like to have longer LED notification.
Maybe I should check out Handcent, but I'm actually quite happy with the standard one for now.

Yes I noticed that the LED stops after 5 minutes. I have very little in the way of add on apps installed too.

I don't mind the default SMS and canned handcent. I am using an app called missed reminder to keep the notification going as it is important for me to have text messages wake me up.

Setting this at 10 minutes, I noticed that the LED went for 5, stopped, and when this kicked in it went for another 5. So I have set this app at 5 minutes to keep it ticking.

Did you notice this had an effect on battery life? I don't have any audible or vibrating alerts on for texts so it is only the LED i'm interested in, but I did notice when downloading the app that it said it can prevent the phone from sleeping.

The 5mins limit is a known issue. I've contacted HTC in the past about the 5mins limit and they informed me that it's a hardware design to conserve battery life and there is no way in firmware to lengthen the time limit. Of course that's not exactly true since Handcent can reset the timer for another 5mins, so I'm sure HTC software engineers could do it too and add it as an option or simply default to infinite reset. As for the battery life, it's a very low output LED with reasonable efficiency and the once per second flash would have no appreciable affect on battery life, even if flashing for 24 hours. The current drain would be so minimal as to have no obvious affect...I doubt it would even be measurable as tapping the Power button to activate the display for a few seconds would drain the battery substantially more.

I took a look at Handcent and another SMS app, but ending up going back to the default app. I don't mind the 5mins limit as I check my phone by hitting the Power button for missed calls/texts whenever I need to do so, such as after waking up in the morning.

It's not a big deal really, but I think HTC was being FAR too conservative with the 5mins limit and they should correct it with a firmware update and not make the same mistake with any future models.

one thing. I'm new to this phone. How do you get the notification light to come on ?

By default it should be enabled and it will flash a brief green pulse at 1sec intervals whenever you miss a call, voicemail, text, email, etc. It's in the same location where the red charging LED glows when you top up the battery. If yours is disabled for some reason, you can enable it by pressing Menu, Settings, Display, Notification flash, and simply tick the options in the list. I have all six of mine enabled.

I tried Missed Reminder but ended up going with LED Me Know. Even though it's still in beta it's quite stable, and I haven't noticed a single drawback so far.
