Just bought an, A500 and right out of the box it asked to update. The update was Acer_A500_7.014.01_Com_Gen2. My android version is 3.2 and my build number is Acer_A500_7.00.6.01_Com_Gen2. It downloads it fine, but when installing it starts to install but then stops. It shows a triangle with a ! in the triangle. I have 3 questions. First, what is this update? Second, why does my update keep failing? And third I have 10 days to get a refund for this tablet. If there is a problem with the tablet should i return it? Everything else works fine other than the updating problem, I have no issues with the a500.

I have heard others that have problems with updates. Mine has been really good at them. You have to make sure your battery is fully charged and preferably pluged in when updateing. It also depends on how fast your internet connection is. I did my ICS update with my Verizon Air Card. You may have to try to do the update a few times for what ever reason they don't always take on the first try.
This tablet is the best one out there and well worth buying and maintining. The update you are tryi ng for if I'm not mistaken is the one that comes before the ICS update. The final update from Acer for this tab is ICS. There will be no updates after ICS. If you scan the forum here and look for posts from Mrhelper you will find he is the most knowledgable on the subject. Find his posts and you will have answers to just about any question you may have concerning this tablet.

This is app required to support the update: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.FD.updater&hl=en.

You should also follow the good advice of dbldipp above about keeping the device fully charged during update.

I know a few people who still prefer to use HC 3.2, so if you are pleased with that, there are really not many reasons to upgrade to ICS. I have actually seen several significant reasons not to -- e.g., motion sensor problems, GPS logging file storage leak, increased instances of hanging while suspended (SOD), etc. The improvements on the other hand are mostly superficial for most users.

7.014.01 is the full upgrade package to 4.0.3 (ICS). If the Android version under Settings > About tablet is 3.2.1 the tablet has the most current stock HC ROM.

One thing I did not mention is that performing a Factory data reset prior to the ICS update has improved overall results for many, so if you are still considering the update, that may help.

the update that comes up, from what i was told is for ics. do i need 3.2.1 before i can update to ics. if so, how do i get 3.2.1 if the ics update keeps popping up?
It is odd that your device is being offered the 4.0.3 package (for installation on 7.014.01 -- i.e., HC 3.2.1). The number on the name in that package refers to the build for 3.2.1, which is what you would expect. My understanding is that the name on the package should instead refer to your current build (7.006.01), but you are getting a package for a 3.2.1 build (7.014.01). Again, the 7.014.01 refers to the ICS upgrade package for 3.2.1, not 3.2. You stated that your current build number is 7.006.01. That suggests the possibility that your system is corrupt, because the 3.2.1 patch may have been only partially applied and failed. It may alternately mean that Acer supports installing that full ICS image on 3.2, which in turn may then suggest that there is some other problem with your tablet.

I recall you stating that you still had a few days to return the tablet. If you don't like the current state of your machine, consider that you appear to be headed toward manual flashing of ROMs to fix this. If you can still return the tablet to the seller, that option may be less risky. The problem you are seeing may be due to a failed storage device in the tablet, and it would be a shame to only discover that after trying to manually flash another ROM image.

Here are a few sources for ROM images if you decide to go the manual upgrade route: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560.

If you decide on that route, you may also want to consider some of the popular custom ROM options. There are members on this site who may be able to help get you started on that if you wish.
