Root Class 6 SD Card

I found 8GB Class 4's for $15 and Class 6's for $18. I would personally spring the extra $3.

Someone posted recently (can't remember where here, exactly) that the Droid can't make use of any speed beyond that of a Class 2 card...hardware/bus limitation. Assuming the post was correct (and it at least sounded authoritative) all you'll get from a class six is faster copies to/from the card and your computer. Won't speed up interaction of the Droid/OS and the card...

Edit: I bought a 16GB

Well there's a sweet spot for memory sizes. It's constantly growing and seems to be around 4-8GB right now. Below that, you're saving about $4 for half the memory; not worth it. Above that, the price starts to go up exponentially.

I read this and there is no real evidence that it won't help, oh well it's already on it's way so I will let you know when it gets here.

edit oh and to the op I have seen that brought up in several other threads and people have dont benchmark tests of sorts so I wouldnt be surprised if its true

LOL...my wife says I sound like Dork Vader w/all this Droid stuff, but she believes that spending hours and hours in a store trying on clothes is "fun," so I kind of feel it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

I don't believe you said...what were you hoping to improve w/the faster card? Are you using apps2sd with Cyanogen, or ?

Aside from that (and copying files to/from the card) I don't know of any activities where a faster card will make a difference.

I have read through and referred back to the thread more than once in making my determination *NOT* to buy a Class 4/6 card for my phone.

One post in particular makes mention that there is negligible speed increase (compared to what should be) when using a different class card - as if the hardware is blocking.

Since you have ordered your card, you can be the new guinea pig - run test and show us that it indeed makes a difference.

I posted something similar in another thread about it here, but RE: the later posts in that thread - I also bought an 8GB Class 6 SDHC (Sandisk, IIRC) card intending to use it in the phone, since I don't use that much space. The 16GB was going to go into my Sansa Clip+.

Before I even bothered putting the Class 6 in the phone, I benched it on my work PC against the stock Class 2, and the stock 16GB Class 2 outperformed the Class 6. Both were well above the rated spec (in the high teens MB/s ballpark), but the stock Class 2 SHDC card was no slouch in my limited experience.

Class 2 > Class 6? Something ain't right. According to specs, the Class 6 should be at least twice as fast as the Class 2.....

That's probably a limitation on the bus you were using; for example, it doesn't matter if I use a flash drive or a comparatively slow USB hard drive; anything plugged into USB tends to hover around 20MB/s. If it's an internal card reader the internal bus on the motherboard might even be limited so that you can't achieve very high speeds.

But there's no way a Class 2 and a Class 6 plugged into a USB 3.0 card reader on a USB 3.0 port would do that, for example.

I don't have a true benchmark test but while using my class six I noticed that my pictures loaded faster than class two. I tried this on both my eris and droid using a blind test (didnt look to see which card I put in each phone and chose which one was faster each time with the same exact files and each time the class six was the one chosen. Once again no hard numbers...

The debate before that posting centered around exactly the issue discussed in the posts above, about the Droid hardware/bus limitation.

Thanks, GLD - I knew I had read that before but stopped looking for it lol.

However ,according to specifications, those numbers are *way* off of the actual capabilities of the Class 6 cards. So, for the performance received, unless you really have the spare cash laying (lying?) around, I'd advise against the 'upgrade' to a Class 6 16 GB card.

A class 6 32GB OTOH ....would kill the bank but may be worth it (not!)
