i installed chompSMS and i really like it, the problem is that when i receive a text message both the original message app and chompSMS both get the message and then i get two alerts in the top bar... my questions are:

1. can i uninstall messages app so there is no conflict between the two?

2. if necessary can i reinstall the messages app in the future from the marketplace?

thanks in advance for all your help
and long live android :D

Many apps use the alerts and most of them tell you that SMS alerts all need to turned off. I use SMS Popup, ChompSMS and one other I can't recall, ringo lite I think.

It is important as there is some reason the api won't let the dev control this setting.

I think android took the rights of a 3rd part app from secretly changing settings ... so you must either manually change a setting or the program must prompt and ask permission to change the setting ...

This is some protection from an app secretly changing you system settings ...

That makes perfect sense. It gets a bit nuts and many exper'd devs mention it over and over in their apps with SMS. The conflict in this messaging type seems higher, so the multiple warnings are important, and it takes a bit of wrangling to get the right app to provide the notification.

Why are people using Chomp over the HTC SMS application?

I understand on the G1 because Chomp gave the G1 touchscreen texting, but on the Hero what are the advantages please?

download it yourself, try it out and then come back and post your comments.
trust me try it and you will realise why so many people use it and why its one of the most popular apps.
i couldnt go back to htc message

A question for those using this on HTC Hero, does the trackball show up when you receive a mail?

I can see you can change the colour of the trackball in the CHOMPsms settings but each colour I chose has the same result: No lighting up of the trackball.

I saw that you can change the color of the led light, but I did not see a setting for chaging the trackball color. That said, I can not successfully change the color of my led as chomp has that option under the application settings. I can only get a green led to light up (very similar to the stock HTC messaging app). Yes I have turned off the stock messaging notifications already. BTW, I'm using a sprint HTC hero.

I have a Sprint Hero. I like the default sms widget just fine except for the alert tone. I have an ap called Ringdroid that worked real well to make and install ringtones and message tones. The ones I created are in the folder and selected but the phone still uses one of the preinstalled ones. I tried chompsms, nice ap, uses the tone I had selected but I can't find a setting to turn off the default widget. I don't care which one I use but only want one on and my own tone asigned. Any sugestions either way.
