Is This The Phone For Me?

First off I did a search of the forum and I must be f***ing something up somewhere cause I couldn't find a thread like this, so in advance, sorry.

I can't decide between the Desire and Nexus One.

I think the Desire would be the better option, but I like the customization I have seen with the N1 with the themes and rooting.

Are these same customizations available with the Desire?

Effectively, tell me why I should buy this phone over the N1?

I have red countless comparison reviews but none actually say which one would be better all they do is show software and specs.

Ok, the way I see it is there are no significant cons with either phone. However each phone has what can be argued as a big pro. The Desire has the HTC Sense interface. You know, the friends stream, weather widgets, pinch and zoom over more apps etc. The Nexus one doesn't. The Nexus one is supported directly by Google, so you will get the latest and greatest Google updates first on this phone. For Example the HTC Hero has Sense which came out last summer. Consequently it is still on last summers' operating system because it takes time to update sense too. People expect the same delay with the Desire.

My opinion is always changing. Initially my preference was the nexus one. I was happy with the 2.1 interface and loved the idea of getting the latest updates quickly. Now I favour the desire. Playing with the sense UI, I really like it! I've also changed my mind and think it is a slightly better looking phone. So what about delays with getting the new OS updates? Because the Nexus one and the Desire are essentially the same hardware, I suspect when a new OS comes out for the Nexus one it could easily be ported to the Desire. Just my two cents.

There's little to choose between the two as far as hardware specs go, so I think most of it will be personal choice.

I think the Desire looks better, and I prefer the optical trackpad and physical buttons over the N1s trackball and haptic buttons, others may think differently.

You mentioned an interest in rooting, so the differences in the two phones are even narrower. There's already SenseUI out for the N1 and I'm sure there'll be lots of custom ROMS out for the desire too.

Honestly, it's pretty much flip a coin between the two as far as I can see. I'm sure you'll be happy with either.

Yes, you can switch Sense off and have the standard UI of the Nexus One. Then you can do the same customisations. I've actually seen lots of the customisations incorporated with sense.

A couple of other differences which people have not mentioned, the N1 has a noise cancelling feature which is supposed to improve call quality in noisy environments.

The other is HD 720p video recording, I'm pretty sure the N1 does this and it's not on the desire (as far as I know), I'm not sure if this is possible via a software update, anyone ?

im in the uk, and they are everywhere, but how come nobody in the us has them? is it a uk only thing?

Not been released in the US yet. Looks like we are the first to get them. Our phones won't work on all the networks there. Definitely not Verizon and Sprint. Don't think 3G will work at all, so it is not even worth people in the US importing them early.

KopKIWI. I'm in New Zealand. Just about finding the right price and a way of not paying the tax which will bend me over.
