Sorry for adding more confusion to the pot about all these release dates but just mailed HTC this morning and got this reply.

Thank you for your enquiry about 2.1 update

Some of the phones in our Android line up including your Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the internet once it is ready. When the upgrade is ready, we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including Twitter and Face book

If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you.

Best Regards

Hey, I also mailed HTC asking about release dates for Android 2.1...

My mail:
Hi, I've read a lot of unofficial press over the last three months regarding when the HTC Hero (sim free) would receive an Android update to version 2.1. At first it was reported for the start of March, then the middle, then the end of March... as soon as the start of March arrived the news spread that it would be early April, then 16th of April and now the end of April. I'm sure it's frustrating for customers and HTC that unofficial dates are released, it really annoys those people waiting for the update to find the only dates being mentioned are unofficial dates... it doesn't install hope in HTC Android customers. It would be great if HTC could release an official announcement, releases dates for OTA updates and dates for when you can go and download the update yourself from the HTC website. Communication (official) would go a long way for HTC customers. I appreciate it's not easy to supply dates all of the time, but communication to that affect would be good. Thank you, looking forward to the update (Android v2.1).

HTC (Jozefine M) responded with:
Thank you for your email.

We have no information at the moment confirming a specific release date of an upgrade to 2.1.
Please become a member of the e-club on our website, then you will receive a confirmation via email when the upgrade is available.

Once more detailed information is available on the expected release
dates and which of the HTC branded Hero devices will be updated then a more formal announcement
will be made.

My biggest issue here is the lack of communication...

Maybe a repeated question sorry guys but cannot see after a search:
I have an unlocked hero (i'm in China) I wouldn't be worried about the upgrade to 2.1 as all is good except - just bought BT headphones and they pair but don't connect, works fine with my BT laptop so phones work. Will 2.1 solve my problem and how can I get upgraded safely

How can I find out what android version I am running now? I have a Hero. Am I right in saying that a 2.1 update is a 'ROM'?

One last question if I may... I am with Orange in the UK. Will the update appear on HTC's support site when it's ready - or on orange's?

Thanks if you can help :)

Settings>About Phone> Frimware Version.

I got my update (1.5)from the HTC site and I'm on Orange, it'll show up on that site I'd imagine. I wouldn't expect to see it the same day as the generic HTC Rom. Perhaps the day after or a little longer.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm sounds to me like theres "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians" I ran HTC (UK) earlier today (15th April) and they said theres no official date yet to the release of 2.1 and as soon as it is available it will be on their website. So christ knows how folks are getting emails from HTC? Or is it just the customer adviser I rang knows bugger all lol?!! :D

Spot on. Given the different dates (some of which have passed) allegedly from HTC emails/phone calls I think that most people quoting dates from HTC are either having a bit of a "giggle", or speaking to someone just blagging it on the other end.
