Help New to Android: An iOS Convert

Oh, the delusion of youth.

I realized one day that my hands were cramping up due to the screen size:hand size ratio.

Then I realized how slow and antiquated it was.

Then I realized how little Mother Apple would let me do.

Then I realized how the iPhone 5 solved none of these problems.

I'm not going to continue this rant because all of you know what to think about Apple products. So I found the Note 2, obsessed about it for awhile, and bit my nails to stubs until I could steal my sister's upgrade yesterday, and go to the Verizon store and buy one.

So far it's ben great, but a big adjustment. It's hard coming from the Sesame Street-esque iOS 6 to the much more sophisticated, adult operating system that is Android. I have a feeling, though, that I'm not only going to get used to it, but I'm going to love it, due in part to the level of customization and expansion I now have.

But it hasn't been flawless, which is the main reason I am here, and why I will continue to add to this thread.

ISSUE #1:

The biggest problem I have had so far is with Messaging. I have been receiving all of my text messages (or at least I think I have), but I have been having a lot of trouble sending them. Obviously this is a pretty vital feature I need to have full use of. Basically what happens is, the program seems to "freeze" on a really frequent basis. I'll be on one of conversations, and then I'll try to go back to the main list of conversations- and it'll freeze. I can hit the Home button and go back, but the Messaging will still be frozen. After 30 seconds or so it'll say "Messages has stopped responding" or something and I have to close it.
Then, I'll try to send a text (I know, I know, the audacity!). I'll press send, and the circley thing will spin.

And spin.

And spin.

AND ******* SPIN.

Obviously this drives me a little nuts. It doesn't happen with every text, but the vast majority of them will either take 15 minutes or so to send, or they simply won't send at all. I've tried restarting, I've tried forcibly stopping it, etc. Nothing has worked, and it's really pissing me off.
Am I going to have to reboot the whole phone, and lose all my information? What should I do?

Oh and yes, for those of you who will ask, I have service when this happens.

start by going to Application Manager>all apps>Messaging>Clear Data and Force Stop. reopen messenger, see if that helps.

My suggestion is to upgrade to Handcent SMS or GoSMS Pro. Much smoother with some great features you didnt have with iOS.

I use handcent, I don't even remember what the original was like.

Generally force closing and restarting the program will wake it up. I had to do a reinstall on mine to get some of the programs to work correctly. Seems to be a theme with any droid I have ever owned. Purchase, get annoyed at something that does't work, reinstall, be happy and forget about whatever it was that annoyed me.

BTW, I have zero issues with IOS. it's annoying and boring but it works, until jailbroken then it was good. I had the I4 and I still had to do a hardware wipe every couple of months because it got uppity.

Put the phone in airplane mode, that should help with the battery life

I am a former iOS iPhone user and have had an Android for the past 4 months. I love my Android phone but it's not perfect. Neither was the iPhone.

When I plug mine in at night, I'm usually at 70-80% battery.

please give the android os time... the learning curve is not as steep as it seems in the beginning, everything will eventually fall into place and become considerably more routine.

What you're seeing probably isn't bad battery life but bad battery reporting.

Modern Li-Ion batteries do not have a memory and do not need to be conditioned, but Android needs to be taught exactly what a full charge represents so that it can manage power appropriately, especially with a new phone.

One of the things I recommend all new phone owners to do is to perform a deep power cycle.

Let your phone discharge completely, keep it on until you are warned about low battery and then just let it run out. Most phones will shut down automatically around 5%.

Plug the phone into the original a/c charger, not the usb cable. Let it charge to full uninterrupted.

When the phone says full, unplug the phone from the charger and reboot. Once the phone is completely restarted, plug it back into the charger and shut the phone off. Even if it says fully charged, let it charge for at least one more hour.

Unplug the charger and reboot the phone one more time. Now you should start seeing (possibly significantly) longer charge times.

Without a deep power cycle, it doesn't know the true capacity of the battery. Be advised that you should only need to do this once as regularly deep cycling the battery can harm it. Li-Ion batteries perform better and last longer with incremental charges.

I had this problem with my daughter's EVO 4G LTE. It would receive texts, but not send. Finally, I figured out she left her old phone ON, and once she turned that off and updated her profile, it would send texts.

Not sure if this helps, but I thought I would throw it out there.

If your battery life is much worse than iphone4, then you have a bad phone and/or battery. One of the more pleasant surprises with this phone has been battery life.
I would recommend downloading battery circle app, or any battery monitor app. It does a much better job of accurate battery measurement.

I use ChompSMS for texts and I also have an issue with sending texts at times. I will send a text and then get a notification a few minutes later with a red exclamation mark next to it telling me it did not send. I try again and same thing. Send a test text to another convo and the same. I have to restart the phone to clear the issue. And it has happened on numerous occasions. Even after uninstalling and re-installing the app.

Any solutions on this or is this app just not that good anymore? I never had issues this much when I used older versions on my Evo.

I regularly get around 15-16 hours of charge with mine. I use it very frequently though and have a custom ROM with an overclock kernal.

I've found that by turning the phone all the way off once a day, it helps it to last longer. I'm guessing it clears cache and frees up RAM. Makes it perform more flawlessly.

As for the texts, I'd venture to say that it might be a network issue. If it continues for more than a week, then I'd consult your carrier. I've heard of message issues being a provisioning problem.
